Eight years ago today, I moved from the UK to the UAE. Like many expats, initially I moved alone and if I’m honest I wasn’t sure how long I’d be here. Two years maybe?

What started as a new chapter has truly become home. From the warm welcome I received, to the incredible professional opportunities I’ve been given, the UAE has shaped both my career and my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Over these years, I’ve had the privilege of exploring this remarkable country—its history, culture, and its unique place in the world. Even more inspiring has been witnessing the UAE’s vision for the future, with its bold ambitions for the next 50 years. It’s a vision I’m proud to embrace and be part of.

Thank you to everyone here who has made this journey so special. I am especially grateful to my wife who joined me full time here three years ago having sold her business and packed up our UK life to move across with our four dogs.

Here’s to the years ahead, and to continuing to call the UAE our home. 🇦🇪✨

It’s always lovely to receive gratitude for the work I do but in reality it’s the resilience of the children and their smiles that make it all so worthwhile.

Saif broke his arm a few weeks ago and his mother requested my second opinion after being told by another doctor that he needed to have an operation with insertion of metal nails into the bones of his broken forearm. I did not agree and used well taught principles of fracture care and manipulated the displaced bones, applying a moulded cast with ‘3 point fixation’ to hold the bones in place.

Five weeks later Saif has now had his cast removed and has a straight forearm.

Saif’s smile shows just how happy he is.

The injury may be relatively minor but attention to principles and details makes all the difference. Pediatric Orthopedics covers a range of conditions: some are straightforward and some very complex.

It is so satisfying when the outcome of an intervention makes the patient and his parents happy, however straightforward.

Happy father + happy son = happy surgeon!

Two year old Salam is as happy with the outcome of the surgery performed by Dr Michael as his father is. After watching his father shake Dr Michael’s hand, Salam immediately copied him. Now that his dislocated hip has been successfully relocated in the socket, Salam can start to walk properly and will be able to stride up to Dr Michael with his hand outstretched next time he comes for follow up.

Changing children’s lives is so rewarding.

Jood had not been able to walk for 2 years due to her osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease). She suffered from unhealed fractures and deformities in her legs.

Following complex reconstructive surgery to both legs by Dr Michael Uglow, Jood is able to walk and has been able to start her rehabilitation journey.

We are so proud of Jood and her determination to be active again.

Sending good wishes to my patients, colleagues and friends at this special time.

A year ago, seven year old Adam presented to Dr Michael with an unhealed fracture of his right leg.

His parents were seeking a second opinion as two operations elsewhere had not succeeded in healing the tibia and Adam was struggling to walk. He needed to wear a brace all the time to support his leg.

Dr Michael performed a complex surgery called a cross-union procedure and this has succeeded in healing the bone.

The follow-up today, one year from surgery has confirmed that not only is the bone healed but the leg is growing normally and Adam is back to normal activities without the need of any brace.

We couldn’t be happier for Adam that he can now get on with his childhood without constant pain in his leg.

Six-year-old Khaled has recovered well from surgery for a fracture of his left femur.

A year ago he was struck by a car and had fractures of both femurs. He was treated at another hospital as an emergency but unfortunately the fractures healed in an imperfect position and the left one recently fractured again.

His parents sought my advice and I operated to fix the new fracture. It is now in the correct anatomical position. Unfortunately with that side now correct, it has revealed that the other side has experienced shortening due to its poor anatomical position. A situation that we hope may remodel with growth.

In the meantime he will now have a shoe raise to keep him functioning well as he grows over the coming few years. You can see the difference in this picture as Khaled is standing on a block which shows how much shorter the leg is. He will need ongoing follow-up to monitor his leg lengths and I will continue to see him to ensure he gets the best possible recovery.
