Abu Dhabi is embedding health intelligence into the fabric of the city through the HawAQM Indoor Air Quality Observatory – one of the region’s most advanced city-scale monitoring infrastructures.

The observatory has embedded more than 330 high-precision smart sensors across schools, homes, workplaces, and public spaces, delivering real-time data and advanced analytics on indoor air pollutants across the emirate.

In a region where people spend the majority of their time indoors, this system transforms invisible environmental risk into real-time population-level insights – enabling earlier intervention, informing policy decisions, and advancing healthier indoor environments at scale.

This is sensing-led health in action.

Future Health congratulates the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi on securing first place in the Excellence Awards track at the Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance, recognising it as the highest-performing government entity across the assessment model. We also commend the Department’s Centres of Excellence programme for its recognition in the Strategic Impact Initiative category.

This reflects a sustained commitment to advancing health outcomes, strengthening system performance, and delivering measurable public value - from improved population health indicators to world-leading clinical results.

We also extend our congratulations to His Excellency Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, for his leadership in driving this progress.

This achievement is a reflection of Abu Dhabi’s wider health ecosystem - where collaboration, innovation and shared ambition are shaping more proactive, data-driven models of care.

Mental health systems built on crisis response are being replaced by systems built on early recognition.

As digital tools become increasingly common in daily life and community-based models expand access to care, health systems are identifying patterns in mood, sleep, and behaviour earlier, enabling support before distress escalates to crisis. This shift is reducing pressure on emergency services, improving long-term outcomes, and embedding mental health as an integrated dimension of everyday wellbeing.

In Abu Dhabi, this anticipatory approach is being advanced as part of a broader move toward sensing-led health systems where recognising the signal early is what prevents the escalation of health crises.

This Earth Day, protecting the environment goes together with protecting our health. By sensing small changes in air quality, temperature and other factors, environmental signals can shape outcomes at a population level.

Cities are already putting this into practice. In Seville, a heat-wave naming and early-warning system now triggers public health responses before extreme heat arrives, distributing water, initiating wellness checks, and alerting vulnerable communities in time to act.

Across urban networks worldwide, real-time air quality sensors are giving health systems the data to intervene at the source, rather than managing consequences later.

A new layer of environmental sensing is emerging. One that connects planetary health signals to human health outcomes, equipping communities and systems to act with greater speed and precision.

To sense changes in the environment is to protect human health.

Real-world health challenges are rarely solved by a single factor.

Effective solutions emerge when policy decisions, technological capability, financial models, and the lived realities of communities are considered together.

Future Health convenes global leaders to address real-world health system challenges -where policy, technology, and financing models converge to scale predictive, prevention-led systems.

Health foresight doesn't come from a single signal. It comes from connecting insight across multiple layers.

By sensing change at the level of health systems, populations, and individuals, early signals can be recognised sooner, risks become clearer, and action can happen before illness escalates. This is how connected sensing strengthens prevention and supports more resilient health systems.

In Abu Dhabi, this layered approach is embedded across health infrastructure, advancing a model where earlier insight drives action at every level.

The earlier we can sense changes, the sooner we can act.

In childhood, small shifts in movement, speech, behaviour and interaction can signal how development is unfolding. When these signals are detected earlier, families and systems can respond sooner, supporting prevention, early intervention and healthier trajectories over time.

In Abu Dhabi, this principle is already in action. The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, has launched one of the most comprehensive newborn screening programmes globally, using advanced genomics and AI to screen newborns for more than 800 rare and treatable genetic conditions from birth, enabling earlier diagnosis and care pathways.

This is why early childhood sensing plays such a critical role in shaping health outcomes across a lifetime.

Health systems are often designed to respond when problems have been detected.

Our 2026 theme 'To Sense Is To Predict', reflects a transformative shift towards earlier insight, where signals are detected, connected, and interpreted before disease, disruption, or strain on systems takes hold.

Sensing occurs at individual, system, and population levels. When these signals are connected, health systems can move from hindsight to insight, supporting prevention, preparedness, and a more resilient future.

The Future Health Challenge 2026, delivered in collaboration with MIT Solve, received 393 proposed solutions from 68 countries worldwide, all working towards a more predictive, proactive future of health.

As we mark and commit to standing together for health, we're pleased to announce the innovators advancing to the final stage: SPAQ, Huna Cancer Navigator, ThinkMD, VectorCam, and Unread Signal.

Following pitch presentations and a Q&A with an expert judging panel, these teams stood out for their ability to turn data into actionable insight and real-world impact.

These finalists will present at a live pitching session during the World Health Assembly in Geneva this May, competing for a USD 200,000 grand prize, alongside two USD 50,000 runner-up awards.

Thank you to all participants who contributed their ideas and energy to this year's challenge, and to our judges from the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, IHLAD, M42 Health, PureHealth and Mubadala Bio for their time, insight and commitment.

Together, this work reflects a broader shift in global health, moving from reactive models to anticipatory approaches.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, H.E. Mansoor Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, articulated a shift that sits at the heart of the future of health: systems designed to sense risk early, act sooner, and care before they cure.

Treating health as infrastructure means connecting data, intelligence, and prevention across populations, enabling earlier intervention, longer healthspan, and more resilient health systems at scale.

This perspective defines the direction of travel for global health and closely aligns with the principles shaping the Future Health Summit, where sensing, prediction, and prevention are central to building healthier societies, positioning Abu Dhabi among global leaders shaping the future of health systems.
