EAR Discharge - Also known as Otorrhea
DESCRIPTION
Ear discharge encompasses any fluid emanating from the ear canal. The fluid's characteristics, including clarity, blood content, color (yellow), or pus-like consistency, may indicate an underlying infection or other medical condition.
⚠️ Causes
Otitis Media/Externa
→ Bacterial or fungal infection affecting the middle or outer ear
Physical Trauma
→ Resulting from the use of cotton swabs, ear-cleaning instruments, or exposure to excessive noise levels
Tympanic Membrane Perforation
→ Caused by pressure from infection or exposure to intense sound
Foreign Object Presence
→ Commonly observed in pediatric cases (e.g., beads, insects)
Cholesteatoma
→ An abnormal skin growth within the middle ear
✅ How to prevent it :
Avoid inserting objects into the ear canal.
Maintain ear dryness (abstain from swimming until medical clearance is obtained).
Administer medications strictly according to prescribed instructions.
Gently cleanse the external ear only.
Seek medical consultation if discharge persists for more than two days, exhibits a malodorous scent, is accompanied by pain, fever, or hearing impairment.
👨⚕️ When to Consult an ENT Specialist:
Persistent or malodorous discharge
Presence of ear pain or hearing loss
