15 ingredients I believe are mandatory for good health.

Yes health is a lot of what we can see outwardly, but in my 14 years of practice I've come to realise the factors I don't see influence health the most.

The most gorgeous people can actually truly be shells when they've not attended to their emotional resilience.

When we feel safe, loved, supported and we also have great consistent habits and discipline, we truly have holistic health.

All we know for certain is we have today.

Yesterday has been and gone.

Someone much wiser than me told me once, we are either winning or learning.
Dwelling on things that could have been done differently is fruitless.

Learning to embrace the learning will support us thriving.

Why we all need more fat!
Specifically BROWN FAT!

Brown fat is a type of body fat that want more of (when compared to regular fat.)

Brown fat has metabolically active properties and the ability to burn calories; it can create heat without shivering, a process known as thermogenesis.

During this process, brown fat also burns calories.
Brown fat stores energy in a smaller space than white fat. It’s packed with iron-rich mitochondria, which is how it gets its color.

Increasing brown fat is highly regarded as a possible treatment for obesity and some metabolic syndromes.

Babies are born with a higher percentage of brown to white fat ratios than adults so they can keep warm.

Adults hold a small amount around the shoulders and neck, amazingly, under the correct conditions adults can change regular fat to brown fat!

How to create more brown fat I hear you ask!

We can create more brown fat by:

1. Turning down the temperature! Any kind of cold exposure will increase the proportion of brown fat. A study demonstrated 2 hours at 19oC can recruit more brown fat. A simple cold shower might be a way to have more cold exposures in our lives!

2. Some early animal research showed that irisin may help to transfer white fat to brown. Individuals who were more sedentary produced less irisin than those that exercised more. HIIT was the way that individuals created higher levels of irisin.

Fat has been long demonised.

As always all fat are not created equally, both for ingestion and what and where we hold it in our bodies.

Admiring imperfection.

Today’s world can be fast paced, high-stress, filled with =unrealistic visual reminders of perfection, and a huge focus on materialistic wealth is in opposition to the beautiful Japanese philosophy of a more connected way of living.

Wabi-sabi is a concept that encourages us search for the beauty in imperfection and accept the natural cycles of life.

It reminds us that all things including us and our lives, are impermanent, incomplete and imperfect.

WABI is about recognizing beauty in humble simplicity.
It invites us to become detached from the materialism.

SABI reflects the passage of time, the way all things grow, age, and decay, and how it manifests itself beautifully in objects. It suggests that beauty is hidden beneath the surface of what we actually see, even in what we initially perceive as broken.

Together, these two concepts create an philosophy for approaching life:

Accept what is, stay in the present moment, and appreciate the simple, transient stages of life.

AGEs are advanced glycation end products

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are proteins or fats that become caramelised or glycated as a result of exposure to sugars.

They are a bio-marker implicated to inflammation, oxidative stress, aging and the development, or worsening, of many degenerative diseases, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

Foods exposed to high dry heat cooking, such as barbecuing, grilling, roasting, baking, frying, sautéing, broiling, searing, and increase the amount of AGEs by 10–100 times the levels of uncooked food. when we consume or create high levels of AGEs and our body can’t keep up and, they accumulate and create damage.

Antioxidants and intrinsic enzymes rescue the effects of AGEs

Certain foods that are high in fat and protein such as animal products are more susceptible to AGES

diet is the biggest contributor of AGEs RGS either food comparisons or actual sliding scale of levels

1 fried egg: 1,240 kU/l

1 scrambled egg: 75 kU/l

2 ounces (57 grams) of toasted bagel: 100 kU/l

2 ounces of fresh bagel: 60 kU/l

1 tablespoon of cream: 325 kU/l

¼ cup (59 ml) of whole milk: 3 kU/l

3 ounces of grilled chicken: 5,200 kU/l

3 ounces of poached chicken: 1,000 kU/l

3 ounces of French fries: 690 kU/l

3 ounces of baked potato: 70 kU/l

3 ounces (85 grams) of broiled steak: 6,600 kU/l

3 ounces of braised beef: 2,200 kU/l

How can AGEs be lowered in the foods we eat?

👉🏽 Aim to reduce cooking times and cooking temperatures.

Cooking with moist heat, lower temperatures, and for shorter periods, all reduce AGE formation

Better methods of cooking are stewing, poaching, boiling, and steaming.

Scrambling an egg at low-moderate heat versus quickly frying at high heat would be half the AGEs consumed.

👉🏽 Marinating foods, especially meats, is helpful as acids inhibit the production of AGEs. Use acidic ingredients like lemon juice, vinegar, tomato juice for marinading and/ or cooking with these can reduce AGE production by up to 50%

👉🏽 Limiting consumption of grilled meat to special occasions this BBQ season while consuming more foods that are raw

There will always be challenges, obstacles, and reasons why not to do something including optimising healthful habits, emotional health blockages and addressing stress

When we wait for perfect conditions, our hopes and wishes may never become your reality.

Whatever or wherever your destination may be, only by starting somewhere we have a chance of arriving.
