Arabic:
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحَآدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ كُبِتُوا۟ كَمَا كُبِتَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ وَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَآ ءَايَٰتٍۭ بَيِّنَٰتٍ وَلِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ
Translation (Sahih International):
Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment. (Surah Al-Mujadilah, 58:5)
Insights from Tafasir
Imam al-Tabari explains that "those who oppose Allah and His Messenger" are those who resist the divine boundaries set by Allah, leading to humiliation and disgrace. This is the same fate that befell previous nations who showed animosity and opposition to the Messengers of Allah.
Imam al-Baghawi highlights that this verse serves as a powerful warning: the end for those who oppose the truth will be identical to that of previous defiant nations—humiliation and defeat. He stresses that Allah's revelation of "clear signs" leaves no room or excuse for disbelief.
Imam al-Sa'di elaborates that the punishment described as "humiliating punishment" is a just recompense for the arrogance and haughty refusal to accept the clear signs of Allah, bringing disgrace upon them in return for their rebellion.
Conclusion in the Light of Imam al-Shinqiti and Sheikh al-Albani
In the spirit of the precise and foundational understanding championed by scholars like Imam al-Shinqiti and Sheikh al-Albani, this verse unequivocally asserts that the truth of Islam, based on the clear signs revealed by Allah, is paramount. Those who stand against Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) are destined for abasement, just as it occurred with previous peoples who rejected divine guidance. There is no doubt or ambiguity in Allah's clear verses. The path to dignity, success, and salvation lies solely in steadfast adherence to the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, following the understanding of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors), thereby safeguarding oneself from the humiliating consequences promised to the disbelievers and opponents of truth.
