Can alcohol cause Psychosis?

Yes, consuming alcohol in high quantities can cause psychosis, it is sometimes also referred to as alcohol hallucinosis.

What is Alcohol-induced psychosis?🤔
⚠️It is a severe but rare symptom and an indication to Chronic Alcoholism.
⚠️It is associated with medical, neurological, and psychosocial complications.
⚠️It spontaneously clears with discontinuation of alcohol use and may resume during repeated alcohol exposure.
⚠️It’s effects are similar to that of schizophrenia, where the affected person will experience hallucinations, paranoia, and fear which leads to increased levels of anxiety, depression and panic attacks.

The exact cause of this psychosis is unknown.

However, the leading hypotheses suggest that it could be due to
🔻Heightened dopamine activity
🔻Reduced serotonin levels
🔻Elevated beta-carbolines, or an
🔻Impaired auditory system, which would explain the hallucinations.

It typically presents itself after heavy drinking. Note that it can result from acute intoxication (being drunk), withdrawal, or an ongoing drinking problem.

There is a broad timeframe of when these symptoms might present themselves, making identifying them particularly challenging.

It’s well known that Alcohol abuse can cause signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, psychosis, and antisocial behavior, both during intoxication and during withdrawal. At times, these symptoms and signs cluster and last for weeks, these can mimic frank psychiatric disorders (i.e., are alcohol–induced syndromes).

If you are a heavy drinker and have solid hangovers, headaches and hallucinations, the most effective way to eliminate the symptoms is by stop drinking.

What’s the difference between alcohol dependence and alcoholism?🤔❓

⚠️ Alcohol dependence is a chronic medical condition that typically includes a current or past history of excessive drinking, a strong craving for alcohol, continued use despite repeated problems with drinking and an inability to control alcohol consumption.

⚠️ Alcoholism is excessive and repetitive consumption of any alcoholic beverages to the extent that the drinker repeatedly is harmed or harms others. The harm can be physical, mental, social, legal, or economic.

There are more similarities than differences between the two.
"Alcoholism" and "Alcohol dependence" are considered outdated terms now, alcohol misuse can still be a problem that needs to be addressed through proper treatment. Medical community is now in favor of the broader term Alcohol use disorder (AUD) ✅

Alcohol use disorder can range from mild to severe misuse

Mild alcohol use disorder may mean that you misuse alcohol, but that use hasn't yet severely impacted your physical health or responsibilities like school, work, or family

Severe alcohol use disorder is when consuming large amounts of alcohol has altered areas of the individual's brain and the brain's reward center has been negatively affected due to the frequent spiking and cashing of dopamine levels.

Alcohol use disorder disrupts many areas of the person's life and can cause a host of medical issues, legal trouble, physical problems and other detrimental situations 😳🤯

Signs that you may be struggling with an alcohol use disorder
🔺Alcohol is all that's on your mind
🔺You drink regardless of the consequences
🔺You are either constantly drinking, drunk or hungover
🔺You have attempted to stop/cut back on drinking but failed

How to get rid of alcohol addiction or rather what to expect when you decide to stop drinking alcohol daily. 🥃🍷

If you are reading these lines, I guess you have decided to quit alcohol or control your alcohol intake and now wonder how much time it will take to heal and recover.

If you choose to stop drinking daily and heavily, you will likely experience withdrawal symptoms.

The time to detox depends on a few factors
⚠️How many days a week do you drink?
⚠️How much you drink?
⚠️How long you've been drinking?
⚠️Have you gone through detox before?

The good news is that most people stop having detox symptoms 3 to 5 days after their last drink.

Not bad. Right?

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️According to the Industrial psychiatry journal, here's what to expect in the first 48hrs when you stop drinking alcohol.

⏰6 hours
Minor withdrawal symptoms usually begin about six hours after your last drink. For example, a person who has a long history of heavy drinking could have a seizure six hours after stopping drinking.

⏰12 to 24 hours
A small percentage of people going through alcohol withdrawal have hallucinations. They may hear or see things that aren't there. While this symptom can be scary, doctors don't consider it a severe complication.

⏰24 to 48 hours
Minor withdrawal symptoms usually continue during this time. These symptoms may include headache, tremors, and stomach upset. If a person goes through only a little withdrawal, their symptoms usually peak at 18 to 24 hours and decrease after four to five days.👇👇

If you are struggling to leave Alcohol, you must find professional help as soon as possible to avoid falling into these patterns.

Are you struggling to Quit alcohol? Or want to drink in moderation?🤔🤔

Trying to quit alcohol when you have a legitimate addiction can get very difficult.

This brings on one of the most challenging withdrawals that one can experience when leaving any substance.

You can try cold turkey or use medication and that will help you to detox for few days or weeks or a month for some. Alcohol is hard to put entirely out of sight and mind and most of the time these methods lead to RELAPSE.

The cravings will reprise periodically.

You can try to avoid those brunches or bars or visiting those friends who drink but alcohol is everywhere once you step outside your house
🍺Malls
🍺Supermarkets
🍺Friends and family homes
🍺Office
🍺Favourite restaurants
🍺Bars or Cafés
🍺Gaming Centers, Bowling or golf

Alcohol is a social drug.

You can’t entirely escape it.

⚠️You can’t keep yourself locked up in your home to stay away from alcohol
⚠️Not going to your favourite restaurant because they serve alcohol
⚠️Not visiting your friends because they will be drinking

It's hard to surround yourself with only non-drinkers.
You’ll have friends and acquaintances who don't truly understand the gravity of trying to stay sober & battling alcoholism.

It can be frustrating😢

Many don't realize how insensitive it is to say things like try this drink, just take a sip or just one drink to somebody in alcohol recovery.

Going back to the cravings.👇👇

For people with severe alcohol addictions, withdrawal symptoms will manifest about 5-10 hours after the last drink.

If your level of dependency isn't quite so dire, you will have a few more hours than that before acute withdrawal begins.

For most alcoholics, the acute withdrawal phase lasts between 5-7 days.

Of course, that process can be more straightforward with the help of professional support.

College drinking takes an enormous toll on students lives worldwide🍻

Drinking at college is a RITUAL 🥃🍸🍹🍷🍺
Some students come to college with established drinking habits, and others start drinking as they are curious or just to fit in or be accepted by the cooler kids or gangs.

According to NIAAA (national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism), many college alcohol problems are related to binge drinking. 👇👇

National survey in United States states that 53% of college students ages 18 to 22 drink alcohol and about 33% engage into binge drinking.

Binge drinking is defined as consuming 5 drinks or more for males and 4 drinks or more for females in about 2hours. 🥃🥃🥃

However, most college students drink at least twice that amount, a behavior that is often called high-intensity drinking.😯😮

Drinking affects college students, their families and college communities.

Heavy drinking or Binge Drinking can have harmful consequences
⚠️Death - alcohol poisoning, overdose, accidents, liver failure or alcohol related unintentional injuries etc
⚠️Assault - after drinking fights and assaults
⚠️Sexual assaults - research states that 1 in 5 college women experience s*xual assault during their time in college. And majority of s*xual assaults in college involve alcohol or other substances.
⚠️Academic Problems - About 1 in 4 college students report experiencing academic difficulties from drinking, like missing class, failing to meet deadlines, lack of focus, distractions leading to getting behind in class and disinterest.
⚠️Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) - according to 2019 national survey conducted in USA 9% of college students meet the criteria for AUD.
⚠️Other consequences include
🔺suicide attempts
🔺health problems
🔺injuries
🔺unsafe s*xual behaviour
🔺drinking and driving
🔺vandalism & damage
🔺involvement with the police

Long term frequent binge drinking can damage the liver, heart, brain

Alcohol and family are two things that just don't mix. Alcohol abuse and alcoholism within a family are problems that can destroy a marriage or drive a wedge between family.👇👇

That means people who tend to drink excessively can
🔻Blow through the family budget
🔻Cause fights
🔻Ignore children
🔻Impair the health and happiness of the people they love.

Family members can even develop symptoms of codependency, inadvertently keeping the addiction alive, even though it harms them.😲

Not good!👇👇

Here are 4 of the most common issues that affect alcoholic family members

🚩Neglecting essential duties
😲 Alcohol impairs one's cognitive functions and physical capabilities😢, which will likely result in neglect of responsibilities associated with work, home life, and school.

🚩Needing time to nurse hangovers
👀 Alcohol has various short-term side effects, one being hangovers.
The physical state of a hangover may be temporary - It can significantly disrupt a person's ability to meet commitments and invite unhealthy behaviours 🥃
🔺poor eating
🔺lack of responsibility
🔺lack of exercise

🚩Encountering legal problems. Drinking can increase a person's likelihood of
🔺Getting into fights 🥊
🔺Displaying disorderly conduct in public
🔺Drink & driving 🥃 🚘
🔺Involved in domestic disputes or violence

🚩 Relationship problems
Alcohol abuse in a romantic relationship can have severe effects on both partners, their children, and other family members.
🔺Intimacy issues
🔺Mistrust
🔺Lack of communication
🔺 Abusive behaviour
🔺Lack of emotional availability
🔺Financial burden and
🔺Adverse effects on children

If you are struggling to leave Alcohol, you must find professional help as soon as possible to avoid falling into these or more destructive behaviors.

Have you wondered how alcohol effects our brain? 🤔🧠
Multiple studies have shown that excessive alcohol use can lead to
🔺Damaged brain function
🔺Dementia
🔺Deficits in learning
🔺Lack of memory
🔺Mental disorders
🔺Sleep problems
🔺Cognitive damage

🥃 In the short term, Alcohol affects areas of the brain controlling cognitive and motor functions, causing them to slow down. 🧠
🥃 When used excessively in long-term, Alcohol may cause
🔺Permanent brain damage
🔺Alcohol impairs memory, judgment, and coordination
🔺Disrupts sleep patterns.

I would like to tell you that the bad news ends up there and that all those issues could be prevented and controlled. 💫

🧠 The brain will start recovering the volume of lost grey matter within one week of the last drink with alcohol. Other areas of the brain and the white matter in the pre-frontal cortex take several months or longer to recover.

✔️ The good news is that there are highly effective therapies that can eliminate alcoholism for you in just one session.

You read it right, in just 1 session 💫

🤔Is craving alcohol genetic?
🤔Do genetics play a role in addiction?
🤔What is the heritability for addiction to alcohol?

Let me put your fears to rest
✔️ You are not destined to become an alcoholic just because your parents were an alcoholic.
🔹Scientists estimate that genetic factors account for 40 to 60 percent of a person's vulnerability to addiction.
🔹They also claim Alcoholism can skip generations. If parents are not alcoholics, that does not mean that a child cannot be an alcoholic. If you have an alcoholic parent, that doesn't mean you will be an alcoholic.
🔹A person is never born with an alcohol use disorder. Although people can have genes that predispose them to developing an alcohol use disorder, genetics only accounts for approximately half of a person’s overall risk. The rest of these predispositions comes from the social and environmental factors that a person encounters throughout their childhood and adult life.
🔹Genetic makeup only accounts for half of the alcoholic equation. There are countless environmental factors that may lead to alcoholism.
🔹Hereditary behaviors interact with environment to form the basis of our decisions. Some people experience stress in unhealthy relationship or a traumatising event and turn to alcohol to self-medicate or cope.
🔹The catalyst that leads to alcohol abuse is very often an environmental factor, such as work-related stress, trauma, relationships.

🚩The more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance of developing an alcohol use disorder or addiction.

Risk factors include:
🔺Aggressive behavior in childhood
🔺Lack of parental supervision
🔺Poor social skills
🔺Alcohol and drug experimentation
🔺Poverty
🔺Availability of alcohol
Protective factors include:
🔺Good self-control
🔺Parental monitoring and support
🔺Good grades
🔺Anti-alcohol policies
🔺Neighborhood resources
Environmental factors
🔺Drug accessibility
🔺Physical or s*xual abuse
🔺Peer pressure
🔺Witnessing violence

🔎 Alcoholism is a progressive disease that worsens with time and continued use of alcohol.
🔎Mental illness increases the likelihood of developing alcoholism by 20% to 50%

Do you have a family member or friend who struggles with alcohol misuse? 🥃
Alcohol misuse is defined as excess daily consumption (more than 4 drinks per day for men or more than 3 drinks per day for women), or excess total consumption (more than 14 drinks per week for men or more than 7 drinks per week for women) or both.

It also includes
🔻Long drinking hours
🔻Alcohol cravings daily
🔻Alcohol related after effects - hangovers, headaches, severe dehydration, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and indigestion
You may wonder if alcohol misuse is genetic or not. Unfortunately, the answer is not so simple.

Why?🤔

Turns out. Scientists have found a 50% chance of being predisposed to alcohol use disorder. However, the specific causes are still unknown.👩‍🔬
While it may seem like a genetic predisposition for alcohol tolerance, tolerance is not inherited. Instead, it results from drinking substantial amounts of alcohol over long periods.
However, alcohol intolerance may be genetic. Most commonly seen in those of Asian descent, alcohol intolerance is when the body has an adverse reaction to the presence of alcohol.

Suppose alcohol use disorders run in your family or your friend's group. In that case, you may want to be careful about your drinking. 😲
Remember that environmental factors and genetic predispositions lead to alcohol use disorders and that only the help of a professional can help you eliminate alcohol dependence.

🚭 ‘Just try it, you can do it’
🚭 ‘Use patches, they work!’
🚭 ‘Get medication’!

Here is the truth,
If you have tried these methods in the past to quit smoking and failed, you know that the generic advice like this doesn’t work.

Here is the reason why,

⚠️ Because studies have shown that smoking is 80% mental addiction and 20% physical addiction.

And when you just use your will power you are basically at a fierce war with your mind.

That’s why when my clients come to me to quit smoking, we address the core issues why your mind wants to smoke!!

After finding the core issue we work on creating new pathways for your brain to follow so that it becomes easier for you to quit. 🚭

You see you are fully capable of changing how your mind thinks 🧠 and creates behaviour patterns and habits in your daily life. And that’s what help you to create new associations with smoking 🚬 and you are able to quit because your mind no longer wants it so it doesn’t become a breeding ground for cravings.

If you are interested, I am opening 5 FREE 30-minute spots this week to help you find out the core issue of your smoking behaviour so that it can be addressed and dealt with forever when you are ready.
