Co-founded by mothers Rubina and Zainab, Bumps to Birth is a home-grown online boutique specialising in pre-packed maternity hospital bags for mums-to-be and their babies. During her third pregnancy (the first in Dubai) Rubina soon realised that the task of putting together a labour bag was, in itself, a laborious experience. Whilst juggling two older children and various other commitments, she found herself waddling from store to store trying to source the best products for herself and her unborn daughter. Reminiscing about the difficulties, led to the idea of curating a pre-packed maternity bag fully equipped with essentials for the hospital stay. From labour to the days that follow, our bags have everything an expectant mum and her baby could need, during and post labour. Convenience at the click of a button means mum is prepared, organised and ready, leaving her with extra time to enjoy the simpler pleasures in life. Our adventure, starting Bumps to Birth, can be described like having our own new-born baby. Through sleepless nights and moments of joy and laughter, as mothers we celebrate each baby step Bumps to Birth takes. Women who experienced moderate stress during pregnancy have two-week-old infants with brains that work at a faster speed than infants of mothers without the same stress, and two-year old toddlers with higher motor and mental development scores.⁣⁣

Guyana - In this South American country, tradition has it that moms forego a pre-birth baby shower in favor of celebrating when the baby turns nine days old. Guests bring gifts, including gold bangle bracelets for both boy and girl babies; it’s also customarily when moms take their first post-delivery bath. Some moms also save the placenta in a container and burn it during this celebration, in part as a symbolic celebration of the separation of mom and baby.⁣

Your blood clots more easily now, a protective mechanism so you don’t bleed to death when the placenta is delivered. There’s a concern that a clot in the calf may fragment, and cause clots elsewhere, particularly if you’ve had thrombosis or are overweight.⁣

It used to be said that a woman lost one tooth for each of her pregnancies. Thankfully, that's no longer the case for women who have a healthy, varied diet. But your gums are vulnerable now and gingivitis, or bleeding gums, is very common. It's important to make the most of the free dental treatment you are entitled to (up until your baby is 12 months old) and see your dentist and hygienist regularly.⁣

Help your body - Use a softer toothbrush and make sure your diet is rich in calcium. Drink plenty of milk, but try to make sure it's semi-skimmed. This gives you all the calcium you will need without the extra fat, too.⁣

Some women find a dark line appears on their abdomen in pregnancy. This is known as the linea nigra and is caused by higher melatonin levels. It will fade again after your pregnancy. It tends to affect women with dark colouring more than those with fairer complexions.⁣
