Asana practice offers the perfect opportunity to explore svadhyaya; defined as self-reflection, self-contemplation, or the study of oneself. You move and place the various parts of your body to create an asana. You could do this without any real engagement or awareness, carelessly going through the motions while your mind is miles away, or you could work towards staying present with each and every moment as it arises. You could notice how the body responds to being aligned a certain way, observe physical sensations, watch how your mind reacts to what you’re doing with your body, experience any emotions that show up, and listen to the flow of your breath. ✨

We are very happy to welcome special guest teacher Matt Corigliano to The Shala Dubai for the second time! 🙏🏽

Matt is an experienced yoga teacher, traveling around toe world sharing what he loves most Ashtanga Yoga.

Matt started yoga in his early childhood when both his parents were students of Pattabhi Jois, and they have been practicing and teaching for over 35 years. Since 2001 he had multiple trips to india to study at the source.

We know many of you have been looking forward to this, so make sure to catch him!

Matt will be teaching morning mysore classes:
December 5,6,7 mysore class 6:00-9:00am
December 9, 10 mysore class 6:00-9:00am
December 11 led class 8:30-10:00am

2 - Weeks Ashtanga Yoga Beginners Course - November 19 to December 2 ✨

In this 2-week beginners course, you will have the opportunity to be guided by Nathalie Daou, KPJAYI authorized level 2 teacher. Together we will dive into the practice of the Ashtanga Yoga method, exploring mostly asanas, breathing as well as some basic philosophical aspects of the practice.

Ashtanga Yoga is an energetic and dynamic form of yoga. Movement is synchronized with rhythmic breathing as you progress through a set series of therapeutic yoga postures.
You will learn and move step by step through the fundamental postures of the Ashtanga Yoga primary series sequence, with detailed instructions, experiencing the traditional way of learning the Ashtanga Yoga method.

By the end of these two weeks, you will have a much broader understanding of yoga and you will have the knowledge and confidence to join the Mysore class, allowing you to take the first steps towards cultivating your own self-practice. Mysore Style is considered the safest way for a student of any level to learn yoga.

This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as students who wish to join the Mysore classes.

Throughout our practice journey, we all come across “struggle” postures or asanas. 🥲 Ones that we perhaps might not neces- sarily look forward to, or might want to skip when the teacher is not looking (please don’t do that!). These struggle postures are actually the asanas where you can learn the most about yourself, your body, and your mind. Use it as an opportunity to understand and read as to why your body and mind is reacting to it in certain ways.... And if you’d like to share, do let us know in the comments what that struggle asana you are currently dealing with is at this time! ✨

Practicing in a shala with fellow practitioners means that we have to take extra caution and be more aware of ourselves and our surroundings. A few points on shala etiquette during a Mysore practice: 👇🏽

- enter the shala quietly and close the door gently
- no phones or water bottles allowed inside
- practice the Niyama Saucha by showering before coming to class this is a must. Not only does it show respect to the shala and the practice, but also to your fellow practitioners. Sweat is normal but control of body odor is important.
- avoid any perfume or strong smelling deodorant, and if you are allergic to incense please inform someone from the shala.
- no photo/video allowed without shala permission
- wipe around your mat before leaving the room and try to clean your mat without making too much noise
- focus on your practice and resist looking at others or the door every time someone enters the shala
- please avoid chatting whilst other practitioners are still practicing, and talk in a low voice even as you are outside.
- please do not ask for the next posture. Cultivate the Yama Aparigraha, non-greed or non attachment and the Niyama Santosha, contentment and the internal states of yoga, emphasising quality over quantity. ✨

“When I signed up for the 4 weeks beginners course in February of 2020, little did I know the amazing journey I was about to embark in.  At that point in time, I didn’t know that Ashtanga yoga would transform my body, mind and spirit. Neither I would have imagined that I will be part of an incredible community. Nathalie’s energy and her passion in teaching is very inspiring and contagious. She taught me that the most important in the practice is to create a solid foundation, enjoy the journey without wanting to reach a destination. Besides, Nathalie has created this very special bond between all practitioners which makes us feel like we have a second home. Did you know that you can be a complete beginner to yoga and still join the mysore classes? 🤔 In fact it is the best place to start yoga because you receive individual instructions and learn step by step according to your needs. You can arrive at any time during the session, as long as you allow enough time to finish your practice and take rest. The practice room is silent except for the sound of the breath; this allows you to fully immerse yourself in what is essentially a meditative breathing practice. Have any questions? Meet The Shala Dubai student Yara 🥑 and what she has to say about her practice at the shala:

“I’ve practiced Ashtanga a couple of years back but could never connect to the practice. My mind and my body were not ready to embrace the ebbs and flow of it. I abandoned the practice and never looked back, until the practice found me and this time things felt just right. I joined the Shala in February at a time where I felt completely lost. Day after day I understood what people meant by “the practice is healing”. Whether be it the practice, the shala, the community or the guidance of my teacher- it was indeed very healing. I started to find and connect to bits and pieces of myself. They say timing is everything and it is very true. What a magical feeling when things fall into place at the right time. This is just the beginning of a never ending journey and I look forward to ride every wave that will come my way with the support of this loving community created by Nat.” ✨

This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as students who now wish to develop a self-practice. You will be receiving a 30hour certificate of completion at the end of the course. 
By the end of the course, you will have a broader understanding of yoga and you will have the knowledge and confidence to join the Mysore class, allowing you to take the first steps towards cultivating your own self-practice.
