Recently I've been giving you information on a very common condition I see in women known as 'Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome'. Some of the tell-tale signs of PCOS is:

-Infertility (not able to get pregnant)
-Irregular, infrequent or absent menstrual periods
-Increased hair growth on face, chest, back or stomach
-Weight gain
-Pelvic pain

If you feel like you have any of these symptoms, it would be wise to make an appointment with your gynecologist so they can perform a range of tests to diagnose evaluate your condition.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can affect multiple systems in your body besides your ovaries. These system alterations can affect your thyroid and adrenal glands – this can result in an ability of your body to use insulin (Insulin helps to regulate your ability to metabolize carbohydrates) which can cause you to have trouble with your weight.

A few of you have been asking some questions about weight loss issues and irregular periods. This can be a sign of 'Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome'. I'll be focusing on the cause, symptoms, screenings and treatment for this syndrome over the next few days. Here's a brief overview on the condition:

This hormonal problem is most often an inherited syndrome that involves cyst formation on the ovaries.
Normally, a woman’s menstrual periods are a result of eggs in the ovaries developing. The o***y starts making a ‘follicle’ which contains an egg. If this woman does not become pregnant when the egg is released, the follicle recedes, or dries up, and the cycle starts all over again.
In a woman with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, the o***y produces many follicles developing at the same time or out of sequence. All this causes abnormal secretion of your female hormones, which can cause weight gain and other problems.
