Enlarged Tonsils - Tonsillar hypertrophy.
Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

• Trouble swallowing?
• Loud snoring?
• Frequent throat infections?

Enlarged tonsils may be the reason.

What Are Tonsils?

Tonsils are two small tissue pads at the back of the throat that help fight infections, especially in children.

Sometimes they become enlarged due to repeated infections or inflammation.

Common Symptoms:

• Painful swallowing
• Mouth breathing
• Trouble sleeping or loud snoring
• Frequent sore throat
• Bad breath
• Choking while eating
• Restless sleep in children

Common Causes:

Enlarged tonsils can happen due to:

• Recurrent throat infections
• Viral or bacterial infections
• Allergies / chronic irritation
• Tonsillitis
• Natural enlargement in children

When to See an ENT Specialist

Consult an ENT doctor if:

• Frequent throat infections
• Snoring every night
• Breathing pauses during sleep
• Difficulty eating or swallowing
• Poor sleep / daytime tiredness
• Recurrent fever with throat pain

Early treatment helps prevent complications.

Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on the cause:

• Medicines for infection/inflammation
• Allergy treatment
• Observation in mild cases

Anosmia - Loss of Smell!

Can’t Smell Anything? Anosmia Explained.

Loss of smell may seem minor, but it can signal underlying ENT conditions.

What Is Anosmia?

Anosmia means complete loss of smell.

• May be partial (hyposmia) or complete
• Can be temporary or long-term
• Often affects taste as well

Common Causes:

Anosmia can occur due to:

• Viral infections (common cold, COVID-19)
• Sinusitis
• Allergic rhinitis
• Nasal polyps

Other Causes:

Anosmia can also occur due to:

• Deviated nasal septum (DNS)
• Head injury
• Aging
• Certain medications
• Neurological conditions (rare)

Why It Matters:

Loss of smell can affect:

• Taste and appetite
• Safety (gas leaks, smoke detection)
• Quality of life

Don’t ignore persistent symptoms.

When Should You See an ENT Doctor?

Seek ENT evaluation if:

• Loss lasts more than 2 weeks
• Sudden onset without cold
• Associated nasal blockage
• History of head injury

Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on the cause:

• Medications (for allergy/sinus issues)
• Nasal sprays
• Olfactory (smell) training
• Surgical treatment (if blockage present)

ENT Specialist Advice:

Early diagnosis improves recovery chances. If you notice loss of smell, consult an ENT specialist.

Timely care can help restore your senses.

Adenoid Hypertrophy Explained!

A common but often missed cause of breathing problems in children.

What Are Adenoids?

Adenoids are lymphoid tissue located at the back of the nose (nasopharynx).

• Help fight infections in early childhood
• When enlarged, they can block the airway

Common Symptoms:

• Mouth breathing
• Nasal blockage
• Snoring / disturbed sleep
• Nasal (blocked) speech
• Frequent colds or ear infections

Why Do Adenoids Enlarge?

Common reasons include:

• Repeated infections
• Allergies
• Natural growth in children

Most common in children aged 3–10 years.

Why It Shouldn’t Be Ignored:

Untreated enlarged adenoids may lead to:

• Poor sleep quality
• Hearing problems (fluid in ear)
• Recurrent infections
• Facial growth changes (long face, open mouth)

Most common in children aged 3–10 years.

Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on severity:

•Medications (for mild cases)
• Nasal sprays / allergy control
• Adenoidectomy (surgery) if symptoms persist

Surgery is safe and commonly performed when needed.

Consult an ENT specialist if your child has:

• Persistent mouth breathing
• Snoring or poor sleep
• Recurrent ear or nasal infections

Early diagnosis ensures healthy breathing and proper growth.

Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS)
Why does one side of your nose feel blocked?

A common structural cause of persistent nasal blockage.

What Is a Deviated Septum?
The nasal septum is the wall that divides the two nasal passages.
When this wall is shifted to one side, it is called a Deviated Nasal Septum (DNS).

This can partially block airflow through the nose.

Common Symptoms:

• Nasal blockage (often worse on one side)
• Difficulty breathing through the nose
• Frequent sinus infections
• Snoring or disturbed sleep
• Nosebleeds or headaches

What Causes DNS?

A deviated septum can occur due to:

• Congenital variation (present since birth)
• Nasal injury or trauma
• Growth changes during adolescence

Many people have mild deviation, but symptoms vary.

When Does It Need Treatment?

Treatment may be needed if DNS causes:

• Persistent nasal blockage
• Recurrent sinus infections
• Snoring or breathing difficulty
• Poor response to medications

Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on severity:

• Medications to relieve symptoms
• Septoplasty surgery to correct the septum and improve airflow

Septoplasty is a safe and commonly performed ENT procedure.

ENT Specialist Advice:

See an ENT specialist if you have:

• Long-standing nasal blockage
• Difficulty breathing through the nose
• Recurrent sinus problems

Proper diagnosis ensures the right treatment and better breathing.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Is your snoring a warning sign?

Sleep apnea is more than just loud snoring.

What Is OSA?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when:

• The throat muscles relax during sleep
• The airway repeatedly becomes partially or completely blocked
• Breathing pauses for a few seconds

These episodes may happen multiple times per hour.

Common Symptoms:

• Loud, regular snoring
• Pauses in breathing during sleep
• Gasping or choking at night
• Excessive daytime sleepiness
• Morning headaches

Many patients are unaware — family members often notice first.

Who Is at Risk?

• Overweight individuals
• Large tonsils (children)
• Deviated septum / nasal blockage
• Thick neck circumference
• Family history

OSA can affect adults and children.

Why It Shouldn’t Be Ignored:

Untreated OSA can increase the risk of:

• High blood pressure
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Diabetes
• Poor concentration & mood changes

Sleep quality directly affects overall health.

How Is It Diagnosed?

• Clinical evaluation by an ENT specialist
• Sleep study (Polysomnography)

The sleep study measures breathing, oxygen levels, and apnea episodes.

Treatment Options:

Treatment depends on severity and cause:

• Weight management
• CPAP therapy
• Oral appliances
• Surgical correction (tonsils, adenoids, nasal obstruction, etc.)

Personalized treatment gives the best results.

ENT Specialist Advice:

Seek evaluation if you have:

• Loud snoring with pauses
• Daytime fatigue
• Poor-quality sleep

Early diagnosis prevents serious complications. Consult an ENT specialist for proper assessment.

Nasal Polyps - Soft growths that can silently block your breathing!

What Are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are non-cancerous, soft swellings that develop inside the nose or sinuses due to chronic inflammation.

They are benign but troublesome.

Common Symptoms:

• Persistent nasal blockage
• Reduced or lost sense of smell
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Post-nasal drip
• Facial pressure or heaviness
• Snoring / mouth breathing

Why Do They Occur?

Often linked with:

• Chronic sinusitis
• Allergies
• Asthma
• Recurrent infections
• Immune sensitivity

Are They Dangerous?

Nasal polyps are not cancer, but if untreated they may cause:

• Chronic sinus infections
• Breathing difficulty
• Sleep disturbance
• Loss of smell

How Are They Treated?

Treatment depends on severity:

• Nasal steroid sprays
• Anti-allergy medications
• Saline rinses
• Short courses of medicines
• Endoscopic sinus surgery (if large/recurrent)

ENT Advice:

If you have long-standing nasal blockage or loss of smell, don’t ignore it.
