Yoga in Dubai Yoga as Practice of Self-Transformation, on and off the yoga mat.

05/03/2022

Dear friends from all over the world, my friend Наталья Моголивец has generously offered her yoga and dance studios in Lviv to hundreds of people fleeing now Kharkiv, Kyiv and other bombarded cities of Ukraine. Every night at least 100 people find shelter, food and rescue there. Some of them will move on to cross the border with Europe as refugees, some will stay longer as they have nowhere else to go.

There are 20 volunteers supporting people now and it costs at least 500$ per day to provide for the basics of food etc to keep the shelters operational.

I know many of you want to help Ukrainian people now❤️. Please take my word that every penny donated will keep Lviv shelters operational for as long as there are funds available.

We need your urgent help please to keep this important work going!🙏🙏🙏

It is always thrilling to meet your new students. Especially if like today they will be joining me online from all over the world: Ghana, US, Russia, Malta, Germany, Estonia, Georgia, UAE…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I feel privileged to be able to connect people across different cultures through the sophisticated language of yoga. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Being a world citizen myself, I know how much we can change by adopting the new perspectives of others.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So two of my favourite things - yoga and multiculturalism get combined in this unique dialogue for transformation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And I am looking forward not only to open up the exciting world of yoga to my students. Likewise I am looking forward to learn from them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As one of my favourite quotes says: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“To be a teacher is principally to be a student. Learning starts when you, teacher, find out something new from a student, when you feel immense pleasure from his new understanding and the method through which he gained it. Student is an opportunity for a teacher to get to know himself. Teacher - is an opportunity for a student to get to know himself.” P. Ado. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So let this new journey of mutual learning and transformation begin!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When people stop recognising you

This story happened few years ago back in Ukraine. I went to a friend’s BD party and accidentally ran into my former classmate from the law school. We have not seen each other for 11 years, right from the graduation.

And for some reason, he was shocked seeing me after all this time. Because the only thing that did not change about me, according to him, were my eyes:)

Although, I did not have pink hair then or anything else that would make me unrecognisable today, I have to admit I did change drastically.

Back at the law school I did not fit in on many levels. I was a shy teenager from middle-class family who, at all odds, ended up at the most elite faculty of the top law school. I was surrounded by the kids of influential judges, businessmen, mayors and the likes. And I did not know how to express myself to get accepted.

Underdressed, shy and distanced I found my rescue in studying and going to all possible school competitions. Later on, one of those competitions landed me the first job offer from a leading law firm. Then I moved on studying abroad, changing careers and continents...

But is not the whole story. What my former classmate did not know is that awkward feeling of not fitting in brought be into my first yoga class. As early as at the age of 18, I was going through my very first personal crisis and was ready for the most dramatic inner changes.

For a long time I thought I was just a smart girl. And many years of practice went into accepting my strength coming not only from being a hard worker but also from being a beautiful charismatic woman.

Ironically, my personal transformation started with the desire to “fit in” but went far beyond there.

Not only I learned how to connect with people from different backgrounds, or how to adjust to completely different cultures of Western Europe and Middle East.

I leaned how not to forget who you are while fitting in. How to have fun changing the roles and scenes yet never conforming to the new circumstances unconditionally.

Because human personality is always bigger than any of them.

When (the yogi) feels a tactile sensation (like the crawling) of ants due to the slow upward rise of the energy of the vital breath brought about by checking all the currents (of the activity of the senses), he experiences supreme bliss. Vijñāna-bhairava-tantra
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The realm of bodily sensations serves as an opening to more sophisticated emotional and energetic states.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And this is why in yoga we first learn the body awareness: there cannot be proper self-awareness without it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In modern society, though, we are trained to neglect our physiological and emotional needs to fit the norm. There is even a sad joke that today we treat our body as a taxi for the brain delivering it to important meetings and getting things done.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, when it comes to human psyche there is no blueprint or an ideal rational scheme. There is a variety of unique inner worlds.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To get to appreciate and realize that uniqueness, we first need to acknowledge it. We need to put it in precise words answering the key question: What do I feel? First on a physiological level, and gradually also tapping into the deeper layers of our emotions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Through practice we gradually unlock that bodily and emotional numbness, which in itself is a huge relief. Not suppressing the emotions but seeing them for what they are and then dealing with them in a conscious and constructive way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Join me on this self-discovery journey creating the authentic story of your own body and your personality!

Leave everything behind and move to another continent just because you fell in love?

This is my kind of adventures!

The most daring in that “blind move” from Amsterdam to Dubai was that I have never been to the Middle East before and had no clue what kind of transformations were waiting for me here.

Indeed, there have been many changes over these 8 years in Dubai. From leading successful international career to leaving the corporate world with my daughters birth. From teaching yoga all way long to developing dedicated meditation and breathing courses for international teams and companies. And of course, there have been continuous personal practice inspired by the challenges and insights of adjusting to the new environment.

Looking back I am amazed with the boldness of that 26 year old girl.
Leaving everything behind and jumping into the unknown she surrendered to whatever new was coming. This way she learned that future really belongs to those who dare.

And if one day my daughter asks me what we are capable of when it comes to feelings?

I will say without a doubt - anything❤️.

Why Tradition is Important

Although it used to be cool to be “self-made”, today we know it is hardly possible. Because we finally understand that we cannot grow in isolation from others.

Humanity has been always evolving as a complex and interrelated collective. Similarly, our individual growth requires a support system: a community of like-minded people, a safe space to learn, make mistakes, and gain new insights.

Many years ago, my Yoga Teacher has created such space for me and my fellow yoga students. We have seen each other grow tremendously since then.

We have also seen yoga transforming with us, becoming ever global and diverse in these times of changes. And we have seen us - teachers and students becoming an integral part of the Yoga Tradition itself.

For me the Tradition - is not only about passing on the knowledge. It is also about becoming its active co-creator. Where one’s unique question adds to the deeper understanding of all. Where ones next step in live highlights more possibilities for others.

This is why I am inviting to my new yoga group determined seekers who want to be a part of something bigger. Who want not only to benefit from the thousand years old knowledge of those practitioners who were before them. But who also want to contribute to it and pave the way of those who will come after.

What is Tradition for you? And in your view, is it necessary to be a part of one to practice yoga?

I am opening enrollment to my online international yoga group!

In the last two years, there has been a lot of postural yoga taught online. However, in my view, the transformational potential of Yoga is far from been covered there.

More than ever people around the globe are searching for solutions to the new challenges: How to deal with the overwhelm and manage my attention and emotions? How to thrive in this changing world?

From my 15 years of personal practice and 7 years of teaching experience I know well that yoga has much more to offer than just asana practice:

🌀Yoga has a profound corpus of intellectual practices for dealing with psychological conditioning and limiting beliefs.
🌀Yoga is grounded on sophisticated meditative and breathing techniques for managing our emotions and enabling us to focus on what is really important.
🌀Yoga practice has never been limited to mat or studio but is aimed at improving practitioners whole life.

This is why I invite inquiring people who seek more from yoga to join my new online group.

Every class will include bodily and breathing practices, followed by theoretical part where we will learn and apply meditative and intellectual methods of yoga to your real life situations.

To fulfill our thirst for travel and deep connection, there will be also an offline retreat in Europe in summer’22.

We will practice weekly and you can join one of the following groups:
✅ On Wednesdays, 7pm- 9pm CET time, starting from 24th November; or
✅ On Saturdays, 11am-1pm CET, starting from 27th November.

Fear of change or what is needed to move forward

Making important decisions can be overwhelming. It can be a decision to ask for help, express your true feelings, admit your actual ambitions or desires. It can be the willingness to give up certain behaviour and finally open up to something new.

Making these steps requires proper self-awareness. However, quite often this is not the biggest hurdle. Many of us pretty well understand what we want to change in our lives.

What is often overlooked though is having the balls to do it. After thinking about it hundred times, and running away from it thousand more times… An act of courage - daring to step forward - sometimes is all what missing.

If you are at any of these crossroads now, this is what you can reflect on.

Recall all the important steps you made in your life that changed it for better. Acknowledge that back then you also had your doubts and fears. And think for a moment where would you be now without making that move.

Recall all the steps you took to improve your life, but it did not work that way. Analyse why, what was missing? No preparation/ exhausted yourself preparing/ did not have plan A/B../Z…Sometimes our previous experiences bottleneck the new ones. But only until we convert those mistakes into knowledge and action.

The good news is that after all these reflections, you should feel more confident to jump.

The bad news, it still takes the balls to do it…

Think you got my point:)
You can know what you want for years, and in the best case scenario even have the methodology for doing it. Yet it is all absolutely useless without daring to step forward.

Today is the World Mental Health Day, and I want to celebrate it with this picture.

For me it is a metaphor of taking time to zoom inwards and check in with yourself - how am I really feeling now?

It takes a good amount of training, actually, to be able to answer that question.

It takes a good amount of paying attention and searching for the right words to describe those subtle emotional states.

And it takes a good amount of care. Self-care and sincerity in admitting what needs to be changed.

Because any solution can come only after we know what we are dealing with.

Blessed to be practicing yoga for the last 15 years. My lighthouse of guidance and transformation throughout all these years.

And wish everyone to find his own Tradition, Teacher and Practice to provide for the necessary training, attention and care for your mental health.

Control what you can, accept what you cannot and distinguish between the two… such a simple rule for feeling content and present, yet such a long and dedicated practice required to reach this state.

Diving into the body - this is my tool for getting there.

Breath… surrender… and embrace all the answers waiting deeply inside of your true self.

Without body there is no liberation. Kiranatantra

I absolutely love this quote because it has so many underlying meanings:

The higher you aim - spiritually or intellectually - there should be a feasible support, something very solid that you can return to always. Your body, your inner temple, the psychical reflection of your unique personality.

And if we talk about self-transformational goals (this is liberation for me) we start observing and transforming our body to acknowledge and alter our emotions, as body and psyche are interconnected.

However, this is exactly the point which is quite often missed. Simply exercising the body is not enough. Doing more sophisticated yoga poses, spinning 108 “wheels” of Surya Namaskar, or whatever more challenging bodily practices are there.. is all futile if it is not based on a structured method of interpretations that connect your body to your psyche:

Why is this emotion located in this part of my body? What is this telling about my current psychological state? Where is this coming from and which practice to adopt to deal with it in the most efficient way?

Recently someone asked me “what one can do the whole week at a yoga seminar, isn’t it too long”?

And the question itself is based on that biggest misconception about yoga practices - that they are purely physical. In which case 7 days of non-stop asana practice can be exhausting indeed.

However, true development, same as learning and practice takes time. And if we are truly honest, one week is really not enough to help a complete beginner to answer those big questions that connect his “physical experiences” with something bigger inside of him.

Substantial time is needed to place that ground - the intellectual body of knowledge and practices, that will teach a practitioner how to listen to and understand himself better, how to make his own choices based on his inner feelings that he can finally acknowledge.

But this is really a path, a self-discovery journey and commitment one should make to himself.

And I am really glad I made mine 15 years ago and can share this path with others now.

Our Story

Yoga - is not a religion, not an ascetic practice, not for fitness or weight loss.

YOGA is TRANSFORMATION of the MIND through the BODY. Teaching program is based on following key principles: - Classic hatha yoga (deep focus on breathing through asanas, with extended pranayamas) - Meditation techniques - Cleansing methods - Embodied principles of communication
