⁉️ Did you know that tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s deadliest infectious disease?

⚠️ About a quarter of the global population is estimated to have been infected with TB bacteria, but most people will not develop the disease. In 2023, TB was responsible for 1.25 million deaths worldwide.

Key facts about TB:

🦠 Caused by bacteria that mainly affects the lungs
🗣 Spreads through the air when infected people cough, sneeze or spit
🤒 Symptoms include cough, fever, and weight loss
💉 It is preventable and curable
💊 It is treated with antibiotics

TB exists in all countries and age groups, but low- and middle-income regions are most affected.

Global efforts have saved 79 million lives since 2000! But we must do more to end TB by 2030.

Protect yourself from TB starts with:

✅ Awareness
🔬 Early detection
💊 Treatment

Consult your physician if you see symptoms like prolonged coughing, fever, or weight loss, especially if you've been in contact with someone diagnosed with tuberculosis recently.

🤧 Flu season is here. Are you ready?

The influenza virus is smart. It has many strains. It keeps changing to overcome our immunity, and it jumps species. It exists in every country, and every year, around a billion people get sick with it.

Symptoms of influenza include:

1️⃣ Sudden onset of fever
2️⃣ Dry cough
3️⃣ Headache
4️⃣ Muscle and joint pain
5️⃣ Sore throat
6️⃣ Runny nose

People who are at high risk of severe symptoms include:

🤰🏽 Pregnant women
👶🏻 Children up to 5-years-old
👵🏼 People over age 65
👱🏽 People with chronic medical conditions
🩺 Health workers

Vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu, avoid serious complications and even death.

World AIDS Day is on 1 December 2024.

🙌🏽 This year, WHO calls on everyone to take action to stop the unfair barriers that make it harder to end AIDS.

Over 39.9 million people live with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) worldwide. AIDS occurs at the most advanced stage of this infection. While there’s no cure, HIV can be prevented and treated.

Reduce the risk of HIV by:

🛡️ Using condoms during s*x
🩸 Being tested for HIV and other infections
✂️ Choosing medical male circumcision
💉 Getting safe help if you use drugs

Your healthcare workers may suggest additional medicines (PrEP) to help prevent HIV.

💪 By protecting everyone’s right to health and bringing down new infections, we can achieve an AIDS-free generation and ensure the sustainability of the HIV response.

🗾 If you are experiencing breathlessness and fatigue and are exposed to polluted air, you could have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

🫁 COPD is a common lung disease causing restricted airflow and breathing problems. It is sometimes called emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

In people with COPD, the lungs can get damaged or clogged with phlegm. Symptoms include:

🤧 Cough
😮‍💨 Difficulty breathing
😦 Wheezing
🥱 Tiredness

Common causes of COPD are:

🏭 Outdoor air pollution
🏠 Indoor air pollution
🚭 To***co smoke
🤰🏽 Poor growth in-utero
👶🏻 Frequent or severe respiratory infections in childhood
⚠️ Asthma in childhood

COPD is not curable but symptoms can improve if one avoids smoking and exposure to air pollution and gets vaccines to prevent infections. It can also be treated with medicines, oxygen and pulmonary rehabilitation.
