Study: Intensive treatment raises hypoglycemia risk in type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes patients whose illness involves low clinical complexity had a 1.3% risk-adjusted probability of developing severe hypoglycemia in two years of intensive treatment, compared with 1.02% among those who received standard treatment, according to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine. Hypoglycemia risk was nearly doubled among patients whose illness involved high clinical complexity, pushing risk-adjusted probability to 3.04% from 1.74% with standard treatment.

Researchers found that type 2 diabetes patients reduced their A1C levels by an average of 0.7% and 1.9% after taking 2.5 mg and 40 mg, respectively, of oral semaglutide once daily for 26 weeks, compared with a 0.3% reduction in the placebo group. The findings, presented at the Endocrine Society annual meeting and based on 632 diabetes patients, showed those on oral and subcutaneous semaglutide also had a dose-dependent drop in body weight.
