Doulas provide vital support during childbirth, offering emotional and physical guidance that can greatly enhance the birthing experience. Doulas help reduce anxiety, encourage informed decision-making, and contribute to better outcomes for both parents and babies.
One of the five founders of DONA International, Dr. John Kennell’s quote reminds us that if a doula were a necessary medication, it would be unethical not to use it. This analogy underscores that the benefits of having a doula are so significant that their presence should be considered essential.
Unfortunately, many women face barriers to even receiving those medications that could help them during labor AND the essential support that doulas provide. This shouldn't be the case—everyone deserves access to both doula care and appropriate medical interventions.
Let’s advocate for the integration of doula care in maternity services, ensuring every family has access to this important support and all the resources they need for a positive birth experience.
