🌿When we step into the outdoors, it offers us the chance to learn from the world around us.

The metaphors we draw upon can provide a sense of comfort and understanding, like an old, wise teacher.

Perhaps we realise that we aren’t so different to the rest of nature, and that there are some laws of our planet, like change, that we aren’t excluded from.

Though change can sometimes feel like an unwelcome guest into our lives, we can observe the trees that are born after the fire, or the sun that appears once the clouds shift. We can remind ourselves that although change may make us feel uncomfortable, it’s also change who brings the light again ☀️

The world around us helps us to remember that despite the storms that roll through, they too eventually pass 🌨️ and sometimes the only way through, is through 🌱

I love how this quote acknowledges that we are in a bi-directional relationship with the world around us.

If we think about it, our ancestors evolved within an ecosystem which included plants, trees, animals and mycelia. Our success as a species would have depended on the strength of the numerous relationships we had with these other living organisms. And as we know even between humans, sustainable relationships require both give and take.

Part of the healing we receive in nature comes from the fact that we care for it. And people who feel more connected to nature are not only more likely to conserve and protect it, but also to experience greater health outcomes.

So, let’s connect mindfully when we’re in nature and ensure we don’t just take without first considering how we can give back.

What are some small or big actions you take in caring for the land? 🌿

☀️As the summer approaches and the days get longer, you might notice some improvement in your mood 😁

More recently, research has focused on the role that Vitamin D plays in inflammation. And what does this have to do with mental health? Well, increasingly, chronic inflammation is being associated with conditions such as depression. So, could getting a bit of sun help the body to regulate its inflammatory response, and therefore decrease depressive symptoms?

Reconnecting with the world around us can remind us that we are also part of a bigger story. Whatever it is that we are going through, it sits within a wider narrative; that of the ocean, the stars, the trees, the moon 🌙

In the English language, we refer to nature as the 'other’. That is, something which is outside of the human world. But a recent study has shown that in other languages, when the equivalent word for 'nature' includes humans in its definition, efforts towards land and animal conservation tend to be greater. What’s going on here? You can find out more in this blog post https://wildtherapie.au/posts/whatdoesitmeantosaynature 🌿

I love the gentle reminders in the song “change” from 🧡 They speak of the lessons we can glean from the world around us re the nature of change. Change is not easy, and sometimes we take a little while to adapt or to accept the difficulties that life has thrown at us. But by looking to nature as our teacher, we can take comfort in the fact that change is sometimes a necessary part of life. And in this case, as the sun set and the cold set in, the moon rose to deliver a special reverence to the sky 🌙

More than ever before, the scientific world is turning its attention to the relationship between humans and nature. Researchers are examining the health changes that occur in environments dominated by nature, otherwise known as ‘green’ (e.g. parks and forests) and ‘blue’ (e.g. oceans and lakes) spaces, and finding that time spent in nature is overwhelmingly associated with a number of health benefits. Nature can provide powerful metaphors for coping in life. Though Rachel Carson penned this quote, people throughout history have found solace in the rhythm of nature. In a study exploring therapy being conducted outdoors, one participant described nature as an “...active co-therapist that is somehow showing the way” (Naor & Mayseless, 2021, p. 583). Next time you’re outside, see what metaphors you can derive from nature to apply to a situation you're going through 🌿

Connection to nature is vital to our health and wellbeing and yet, in Western cultures, it is often missed in health assessment and treatment. More recently, practitioners are including it in the delivery of their services. You can read more about how psychologists use nature in therapy at https://wildtherapie.au/posts/natureinpsychology 🌱

What do we mean by “nature”? 🌼🌼
“… why is it that we are increasingly distancing ourselves from the world around us, and what harm may come from continuing to foster this dualism between humans and the rest of nature?”
