🌟 Speech Pathology Availability 🌟

The Teachie Speechie has availability for intensive sessions and assessments during term 1. I’ll be on leave for terms 2 and 3, but if you’re wanting a kick-start of speech and/or language development for your child (including a comprehensive report) I can accommodate this! I will come to you! 🚗

I’m both a speech pathologist and primary school teacher, so I can help navigate the beginning of year difficulties or anxieties for your child or family, as well as provide information to teachers that I know is useful.

🗑️ rubbish 🗑️ ….as a ? YES. ✔️

It was my client’s job to collect the school recycling, which needed to happen during our scheduled session… and no way did I want her missing out on this responsibility! So I tagged along for the learning journey.

Skills developed:
♻️Creating a step-by-step plan
♻️Understanding of time, directions and money
♻️Problem-solving (what if it’s still full?)
♻️Categorising (rubbish or recycling?)
♻️Building independence and confidence

Pointing and naming emotions? Yawn. 🥱
Pop the Pig WHILE naming emotions? Woohoo! 🎉

Speech sound cards, tricky word cards, numbers… whatever! You put anything under these hamburgers* and suddenly a lame task becomes a GAME task. 🌟

*can be substituted for swords in Pop up Pirate, clothes pegs, playdough balls, toy cars… anything that motivates your child!

💪🏼 “Put your brave in front” 💪🏼

I’ve been lucky enough to support a student during their lessons, and this week we spoke about putting your ‘brave in front’ when you feel shy or nervous. 😥

I love that this motto acknowledges that the other feelings are still present, but we can be brave when needed. 😁

I’ll be using this phrase with my students from now on 🥰

Including your child in household jobs (where safe) is so worthwhile for language building. Plus it helps develop skills to better regulate emotions!

CONCEPTS and VOCAB: depth, width, length, together, apart, broken, whole, join, separate

SAFETY AWARENESS: patience, waiting, sharp, deep, allowed to touch vs hands off, protective clothing (eg. boots, gloves)

EMOTIONS: persistence, resilience, perseverance (‘what does Dad do when something goes wrong?’)

👈Communication boards 👀

Shout out to for installing communication boards in their playground and reception / check-in space. 👏

These boards are great for communication, whether that be with speaking or non-speaking people.

Many playgrounds in SA now have these installed… have a go next time you see one! It’s never too early to model inclusivity and diversity in communication styles to your child. 👶🏻🧒🏻👧🏾👦🏼

👨‍🍳 mini chef 👩‍🍳

Kids love pretending to work in a cafe or to serve food… and often it’s common foods that we request in play (pancakes, donuts, soup, coffee etc).

A great way to build vocab while playing this everyday game is to request something NEW!

Child offers pancakes? Request a STACK of pancakes with MAPLE SYRUP and GOOSEBERRIES.

Child offers a donut? Request a CUSTARD-FILLED donut with a HAZELNUT GLAZE.

Child offers soup? Request MINESTRONE.

Child offers coffee? Request a CAPPUCCINO with FROTH.

Your child may ask, “What’s that?” And then… 💥 🤯 …they’ve learnt a new word!

Were we prepared? No…🤦🏻‍♀️
Did we have fun? YES.
Did we build language? YES.
Did we need flashcards? CERTAINLY NOT.

A simple activity such as going for a walk, playing in nature, or creating an indoor obstacle course (for those seeking some warmth…) is a perfect opportunity to build your child’s language.

Opposites: up / down • in / out • sink / float
Superlatives: wet, wetter, wettest
Vocab: puddles, soaked, floating, reflection, shallow

Then we shared the photos with family, which encouraged speaking in sentences and using past tense (after a load of washing and having a bath, of course 🛁).
