Nutrition isn’t one-size-fits-all

it’s shaped by your body, your lived experience, and factors like income, access, culture, disability, and more. So when we hold ourselves to rigid ideals or compare our food choices to others’, we often lose sight of what our own body actually needs.

For example: many of my clients with POTS need significantly more salt than the average person - anywhere from 2–10g per day to support their blood volume and circulation. That would be considered “unhealthy” by general guidelines, but it’s essential for their well-being.

Or my neurodivergent clients, who may rely on routine, safe foods or need to avoid certain textures due to sensory sensitivities. Eating “perfectly” would ignore their sensory needs and that’s not healthy either.

Health isn’t about ticking boxes. It’s about finding what nourishes you personally, in the context of your whole life.

July is Disability Pride Month 💗

A time to honour the strength, resilience, diversity and all we have achieved within the disability community.

As a neurodivergent woman with facial difference living with chronic illness, this month holds deep personal meaning.

My journey with disability has shaped who I am, how I work, and the way I show up in the world. It’s taught me to listen to my body, challenge ableism (even the internalised kind), and be a better advocate for myself and my patients.

It’s also what led me to support other disabled people. In my work, I hold space for people with invisible illnesses who are often dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told to push through. I am also a neuroaffirming practitioner who will always strive to make my practice safe and inclusive for all.

Here’s to celebrating our worth, exactly as we are.

The Nervous System is not just about stress and your emotions, it’s your master regulator.
⠀
Your ability to digest food, maintain your blood pressure, stay upright, sleep deeply and more, all rely on a well-regulated nervous system.
⠀
When you live with dysautonomia, your nervous system isn’t just ‘stressed’- it’s chronically dysregulated. And it needs more than a bubble bath to find balance.

In fact, a hot bath will likely make you feel dizzy, nauseated and fatigued. Because you guessed it…. Your nervous system regulates your temperature too.

Your lived experience matters and it should absolutely shape your care.

In chronic illness spaces, it's all too common to feel dismissed, told "your bloods are fine" or "it's just anxiety." But your body’s story goes far beyond test results.

As a naturopath who lives with chronic illness myself, I deeply value the nuances of your symptoms, your flare patterns, the foods that feel safe, and the moments your nervous system feels most overwhelmed.

Maybe you have tried that treatment and it didn’t work for you, maybe you aren’t fitting the neat little box of symptoms some practitioners expect you too. Maybe you have boundaries and barriers to treatment that we just can’t move. Whatever it is, we can collaborate to find a treatment plan that is suitable for you.

In my practice, your lived experience isn’t brushed aside, it’s honoured and integrated into your treatment. Because you know your body better than anyone.

If you are privileged enough to not be directly affected by the things troubling you about the world…

Switch off from social media, don’t watch the news, get outside, feel the sun on your skin, remind your body that you are safe, relax in water: have a bath, go for a swim, breathe fresh air, lie in the grass, meditate, practice mindfulness, complete simple joyous activities, find the happy moments in your day and recognise them, celebrate the little things, connect with others, rely on your community, talk about what upsets you, seek help if you need it.

If you are feeling a little out of whack and want to explore how I can support you with regulation and finding balance, book an appointment via the link in my bio.

If anyone is looking for psychological therapy referral and want to know what practitioners I frequently refer to, get in touch.

Thinking about seeking therapy? Check in with your GP and develop your mental health care plan.

For years I thought everyone felt like I did.

Daily pain, joint instability, and fatigue were just the norm… especially if you were athletic, right?

As a teen I was always moving. School dance classes, netball training and games, cheerleading five days a week. I was constantly in pain, but I thought that was just the life of an athlete. I chalked my bendy joints and “double-jointed” body up to years of dance and good genetics. My cheer coach would yell at me to “strengthen your ankles!” but no matter what I did, that joint never felt stable. Now I know why.

It wasn’t until I slowed down in my twenties that things became clearer. The pain worsened, the joint instability stood out more, and other chronic illness symptoms started surfacing.

Eventually, I got my diagnosis: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, along with some of its common co-conditions.

Now, as a naturopath, I combine my lived experience with clinical knowledge to support others with similar journeys.

Ever heard someone with chronic illness say, “I’m out of spoons today”? 🥄

The Spoon Theory is a way many people with chronic illness explain their limited energy.
It was created by Christine Miserandino to help others understand what it’s like to live with a body that needs to ration its energy just to get through the day.

💡 Think of spoons as units of energy.
Every task from getting out of bed to making a meal costs a spoon. And unlike others, people with chronic illness don’t wake up with a full drawer.

Some days you might have 12 spoons.
Other days, you wake up with 3.
And once they’re gone... they’re gone.

Pacing is a strategy to avoid flare ups and burn out, but it’s not addressing the cause of the limited energy. Book an appointment and we can get to the bottom of it together 🫶
