Yesterday we joined the global community in recognising World Patient Safety Day 2024, focusing on the theme of ‘Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety’ with the slogan ‘Get it right, make it safe!’.

Accurate and timely diagnosis is foundational to effective patient care, serving as the critical first step toward preventive interventions and successful treatments.

Diagnosis is a collaborative effort involving patients, healthcare professionals, and the entire health system.

Today our teams at Northern and Southern Endoscopy Centre will be participating in a shared morning tea in support for R U OK day.

A conversation could save a life.

Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day.

A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day. And they’re not alone, with 72% of Australians reporting elevated levels of distress.

Regular, meaningful conversations with the people close to you can help prevent small things from becoming big things. By checking in regularly, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.

Thursday 22nd August - Daffodil Day is Cancer Council's most iconic and much loved fundraising campaign. 🌼

On this day, Australians all over the country come together and, for all that cancer takes, we give hope. We give to support people impacted by cancer and we give to support cancer research that will save lives.

In 2023, Australians gave a bunch for Daffodil Day, raising $2.5 million towards lifesaving cancer research. This year, we would love to have your vital support once more.

We know that almost 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, so it takes all of us to give hope for better treatments and better outcomes. The more hope we give, the more lives we can save. That's why we're encouraging you to give it your all by registering to fundraise or by donating this Daffodil Day.

Daffodil Day 2024 is Thursday, 22 August but you can get involved and help support this special day any time throughout the month.

The Australian Government introduced the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) to reduce the number of deaths from bowel cancer in Australia. People with cancers diagnosed through the Program had a 40% lower risk of dying than people who had not been screened.

From 1 July 2024, the eligible screening age for the NBCSP will be lowered from 50 to 45.

▪️ Eligible people aged 50-74 will receive a tax-payer funded faecal immunochemical test (FIT) in the mail and asked to take two separate poo samples before sending the completed test back to the laboratory for analysis.
▪️ An additional 1.6 million Australians aged 45-49 are now eligible to request their first bowel cancer screening test by opting in to get the test mailed to them, with their next screening test to automatically be mailed every 2 years after the last screening test has been completed.

All eligible people aged 45-74 can also ask their GP about getting a screening test.

The next test will automatically be mailed every 2 years after your last screening test is completed.

For further information about the NBCSP please call their contact centre on 1800 627 701 or you can get in touch via the Program's website.

+++++

The updated clinical practice guidelines endorsed by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in October 2023, recommend people aged 40-44 (previously 45-49) are able to request screening via their healthcare professional prior to receiving their first NBCSP invitation.

The updated guidelines also recommend people aged 75-85 who are fit, well and healthy and request screening from their healthcare professional.

This is great news! Allowing an addition 1.6 million Australians to now be eligible to request their first bowel cancer screenong tests FREE

Australians aged 45-49 can now opt-in to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP).

For further details and to opt-in click here https://bit.ly/bowelcanceraustralia-NBCSP

Since 2018, Bowel Cancer Australia has advocated for screening from age 45 given the rising rate of bowel cancer in people under age 50. Today the charity welcomed another milestone in its 6-year campaign, with the lowering of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) age from 50 to 45.

An additional 1.6 million Australians aged 45-49 are now eligible to request their first bowel cancer screening test by opting in to get the test mailed to them, with their next screening test to automatically be mailed every 2 years after the last screening test has been completed.

According to a AIHW study of people aged 50-69, NBCSP participants diagnosed with bowel cancer had a 40% lower risk of dying from the disease than non-participants diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Please do share the good news with your family, friends, and networks, and encourage any eligible Australians aged 45-49 to opt-in now.
