🛠️ CraftLab Update 🛠️

CraftLab, our 10-week Therapeutic Group-based Program, has wrapped up. Each of the three participants brought something completely unique to the table through a craft-based project, including:

🛠️ Exploring the ins and outs of old electronics by slowly deconstructing an old printer and typewriter
🚗 Modifying Hot Wheels to create custom builds inspired by favourite games and movies like Gaslands or Mad Max
📍 Using spare printer parts to map out Pokémon regions in incredible detail

We swapped our original diorama plan and, to bring everyone together on a shared goal, decided to make one large collaborative art piece combining elements from everyone’s individual projects. Check out the final product in the image below :)

Alongside all the creativity, participants were constantly provided capacity building for self-direction, communication, and social skills like planning, problem-solving & decision making, following safety rules, sharing and explaining ideas, collaborating with each other, developing theory of mind, building skills of reciprocal communication and initiating conversations, and strengthening their rapport and relationships together 🧠

After a successful program, we’ll be taking a short break now over the school holidays, but stay tuned - we’ll have updates on the next round of our CraftLab Therapeutic Group-based Program early August📅🔜

🗝️ MLAK Keys - Did You Know?🗝️

If you hold a Companion Card in SA or Victoria, you're entitled to receive one MLAK key for FREE - and it can make a real difference when you're out and about.

The MLAK (Master Locksmiths Access Key) system lets people with disability access locked public facilities 24/7, including Changing Places toilets, lifts, Liberty Swings, and more.

Changing Places are especially useful as, unlike standard accessible toilets, Changing Places facilities are designed for those with more complex/increased needs and often include:
✔️ Extra space for mobility equipment
✔️ Height-adjustable adult-sized change tables
✔️ Hoists
✔️ Showers
✔️ Room for a support person/people

For our South Australian families, here are just a few MLAK-accessible Changing Places facilities around Adelaide:
📍 Ngutungka West Lakes – Accessible toilet (no shower)
📍 Henley Square – Full Changing Places facility with shower
📍 Parks Library – Accessible toilet (no shower)
📍 Adelaide Botanic Garden – Accessible toilet (no shower)

A full list can be found on the Changing Places Website.

While MLAK keys can sometimes be borrowed at these places, having your own means you’re never stuck if you need quick access.

🔗 Get your free key if you're a Companion Card holder:

📸✨Service Highlight – Modelling Pathways 📸✨

We’ve been working on something exciting with one of our adult participants outside of the neuromuscular community and wanted to share a little peek behind the scenes!

After attending a community event to learn about microbusinesses, this participant expressed an interest in getting involved modelling world. Our Developmental Educator, Thomas, created a program to support this goal, which Therapy Assistant, Rhiannon, has been implementing with the participant. Together, they’ve been diving into what it takes to break into the industry - from learning about portfolios to researching agencies, and even hearing directly from working models, things have been off to a great start!

Thanks to the great guys over at FOUR3 Productions, we recently organised an amazing photoshoot session with the participant to start building their first portfolio of headshots and portraits 📷🙌. The day was fantastic, and it’s been great seeing things come to life.

Next up they will keep exploring different agencies and pathways the participant wants to follow, and we can’t wait to see where it goes 💫

Spin Kids for the Teens!🕹️

Just a quick update for our Spin Kids families!

We’ve decided to pause the tri-weekly Saturday Spin Kids sessions for the Teens for now. We know life gets busy — especially for our teenage boys juggling school and weekend plans — and we’ve seen numbers drop a bit this term.

But don’t worry — we’re still keen to catch up during the school holidays! We’ll be running a weekday session in the next break so we can keep the fun going.

The good news — Spin Kids for the Young Ones will still be going ahead on Saturdays as usual! 🎨🎮

Thanks so much to everyone who’s joined us this year so far. Keep an eye out for details on our next holiday session soon!

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out!

🛠️ CraftLab Highlights 🛠️

The creativity has been next level in CraftLab lately — and we had to share what our awesome group has been up to!

Over the past few weeks, the participants of this group-based therapeutic service have been modifying Hot Wheels cars into custom builds and carefully deconstructing an old printer piece by piece (yes, really!) to turn it into the base of a collaborative diorama project. The idea at the moment is a post-apocalyptic scene using textured pieces like circuit boards and rollers, along with their own painted 3D miniatures and custom vehicles to make it come to life.

This is all part of the therapeutic goal of building self-direction skills — from generating ideas and setting goals, to problem solving, adapting to challenges, and seeing an idea through. As well, the group continues to build on their social and communication skills as they work together, share ideas, and engage in this creative project.

This week, they even tested a practice setup to see how the layout might come together with a few individual pieces — and it’s starting to look interesting 👀

We can’t wait to see and share more from this service! 😃⚒
