“I've been suicidal and I've called Open Arms at midnight absolutely a wreck, ready to take my life. And the person that I've spoken to is that person on the frontline.
And yeah, I just wanted to say thank you to those people. To be honest, I wouldn't be here without those people because those are the people that have really helped me and got me through.” Matt, Navy veteran.

When Matt transitioned from the Navy to civilian life he found himself isolated and unstable.

Substance abuse, grief, relationship issues, and a lack of social connections paired with a PTSD diagnosis made for a dangerous combination.

In and out of hospital, he tried many different options to get on top of his mental health, until something clicked with an Open Arms counsellor.

Now he’s sober and feeling well, Matt channels his energy and experiences into making memories with his family and helping others.

You can listen to Matt’s story as part of Open Conversations, an audio series where veterans share their experience seeking mental health support.

Hey all! It’s been a minute since my last post and this may come as a shock to some but I have decided to take a break from my website with saying that I will be shutting Vet Direct down for the foreseeable future. There are a few reasons for this decision but one of those is that with the cost of living going up and having a young family I feel the money I’m spending on the website could be put to better use when it comes to family at this present time. I wanted to thank each and every single person that has had some hand in making the website a success and without you Vet Direct would never have been what it turned out to be! I hope that my website has helped atleast one person out there because that’s what I set out to do! Anyway I wish all of you the best on your life’s adventures and hope that you can understand my reasons for doing this. It’s been a pleasure getting to know the veteran community and I look forward to watching it from afar! Oh by the way the website will remain open until the end of May!

Kind Regards,
Matt Henry

Gday all! Some of you may or may not be aware of Operation Unity SA! If not they are a grass root veteran organisation here in South Australia who have a lot to do with the veteran community and as we know when it comes to supporting veterans sure the grants go to big organisations but majority of the time you can be rest assured that the grass root organisations such as Operation Unity are at the core of the care for the veteran!

Operation Unity SA are a the semi finalist in 'The HELP Awards - Fresh 92.7 Community Champions.' and if you can spare a few minutes of your time to jump on and vote for them your vote wouldn’t be going to nothing!

you can vote multiple times (once per hour) up until 5pm Friday and closes Sunday!

Please get involved as these sorts of things can keep organisations getting grants and the doors open so it is important to get behind them as you never know when you will need their help in the future!

Best of luck!

Hey all I just wanted to make a quick post, as most of you are aware Vet Direct Australia is basically an online directory for veterans to be linked in with veteran organisations, charities, services and communities etc basically anything that can make their lives just that little bit easier however I get a lot of people asking to list thier businesses with me and I just thought I’d let you know that is not really what my website is about, my website is usually organisations that are NFP etc. If you are after listing your business that services veterans you might want to try APOD , but I appreciate all the messages wanting to list with me! cheers all😊

Had a great day out with my one of my daughters at the Repat Kids and Families Day We started off meeting some of the Port Adelaide AFLW Players and kicking the footy, playing some wheel chair basketball, volleyball and table tennis but meeting Vanessa finally in person from Invictus Australia! Then getting stuck into the arts and crafts with Bunnings and finished off with a sausage sizzle and some popcorn, unfortunately my phone went flat so wasn’t able to get any photos🤣🤦🏼‍♂️ but take my word for it we had a blast! Thanks so much to everyone involved at the Repat Veterans Wellbeing Centre in Adelaide for a great day!

Hey all I’m sorry for the lack of social media posts as of late! As you know the website is doing fantastic and I have each and every single one of you to thank for your continued support for that!

Just an update on why I have been so quiet, so it has always been an interest for me to be out in the veteran community and physically working in the veteran space instead of always working behind a screen so in past few months I have been working with the Correctional Officer for Veterans for South Australia supporting him and basically just fitting into helping veterans where I can upon release from incarceration. We are slowly working toward making this something bigger and more sustainable however we are just testing the water and working together when we can at this stage but it is very promising!

I’ve also been working behind the scenes within my community to bring awareness of veterans and veterans support and the lack of support in Gawler and the Barossa so working with local ministers we are working towards bringing veterans services to our suburb!

And the last thing is I have applied to join the veterans group of The Jamie Larcombe Centre, this group is the voice for veterans who become inpatients at JLC and give a different perspective to the centre doctors/coordinators etc so that the centre can be run to best serve the veterans.

Stay tuned as these things develop I will do better to post selfies and pictures to keep you all up to date! I appreciate all your support!

Great chat Carers Australia this morning about how we can provide better support for those partners and carers for current and former serving personnel that give so much and don’t ever ask for anything back and don’t really have that many resources available in such a demanding, stressful and tiring role…
