Burnside Hospital Toorak Gardens
Established in the heart of Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, our flagship hospital offers 76 beds, five operating theatres, a dedicated maternity unit, a high dependency unit, and a range of specialist and surgical services. With a team-based focus on patient safety, comfort, and best practice clinical care, our Toorak Gardens location continues to provide a range of advanced healthcare services for South Australians. Say hello to Dr Dan Spernat from East West Urology, one of our amazing Urologists here at Burnside Hospital!

With expertise across prosthetic urology, uro-oncology, laser prostatectomy, stone disease, and cosmetic urology, Dr Spernat is all about delivering expert care with a patient-first approach.

He is also a dedicated educator, having served as Director of Urology Training at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and as a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Adelaide. He remains actively involved in both national and international surgical communities, sharing his expertise and contributing to the advancement of the field.

Dr Spernat has trained across Australia and New Zealand, holds multiple degrees (including two Master's), and has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers. He’s even the Australian rep for Fight Like a Man International, an international men’s health initiative.

The Brian Fricker Oncology Centre at Burnside Hospital is a place built on compassion, care and community.

Established in 2005 through the generosity of the Burnside Hospital Foundation and the Fricker family, the Centre was named in memory of Brian Fricker AM — a co-founder of the Foundation and a patient at the hospital.

Today, it stands as a calm, welcoming space where patients receive personalised treatment and support from our dedicated oncologists and nursing staff.

Refurbished in 2017, the Centre continues to offer a warm and discreet environment, designed to make every patient feel supported throughout their journey.

Last week, we said a heartfelt farewell to the incredible Suzanna Day, marking the end of her remarkable 12-year journey with us.

Recruited through an international campaign, Suzanna quickly became a vital part of our team. She spent 7 years as Clinical Nurse of SSPU, where she played a key role in driving improvements—including leading the redevelopment of the unit.

In her most recent position as Preadmission Manager, Suzanna was the steady hand behind patient risk assessments and support, ensuring thousands of safe and seamless admissions.

Outside of her clinical roles, Suzanna made a meaningful impact as a Mental Health First Aider, an active member of the RAP Working Party, and a proud contributor to our Ally Network.

She now steps into an exciting new chapter in clinical assessment beyond the hospital setting—and we wish her every success in the journey ahead.
