Janie has been away in the US learning a heap of new stuff - more of which later - and one of the things they discussed was the essential symbiotic relationship of the respiratory diaphragm and the pelvic floor (also considered a diaphragm in some contexts). Did you know forward head posture can contribute to, or even be the primary cause of, tennis elbow? Look how these postural muscles of the neck are under strain, causing them to become tightened, overloaded and inflamed. The nerves that supply the arm run next to and in some cases through these muscles. You can imagine how this, combined with altered mechanics of the arm and shoulder girdle, might impact loads at the elbow and forearm. Melli is our pelvic floor expert. Whilst we all love to treat women for a range of issues, including joint pain, pregnancy/post natal support and building strength to improve bone density, Melli has specific expertise in treating pelvic floor dysfunction, including pelvic organ prolapse, overactive or weak pelvic floor, and bladder dysfunction. Melli is also trained in dry needling for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including menopause related pain. And if you've been to one of her Pilates groups, you will know she is a hard task master, keeping you accountable to your movement goals!

We know we bang on about bones a lot, and that's because we're passionate about bone health at Milkwood. Many of our ageing clients are working hard on their balance to minimise the risk of falls, but falls can and do happen to people of all ages and fitness levels.
Bone density is impacted by many factors, including diet, medications, hormones and activity levels. Research shows that active people have higher bone density on the whole than sedentary people. So, please look after dem bones.. It's yet another reason to keep exercising! 🦴💪🏼🦴

Dem bones! We know we bang on about bones a lot, but that's because we're passionate about bone health. Many of our ageing clients work hard at class to improve their balance, and certainly falls prevention is a key theme in some of our clients' movement goals, but falls inevitably happen to people of all ages at one time or another. So, when you do fall, you want your bones to be strong enough to withstand the impact! Age is not the only factor to affect bone density. Diet, exercise levels, long-term steroid use, hormones and other medications can all influence our bone density. It's well-documented that active people have stronger bones on the whole than sedentary people. So whether it's Pilates, walking/running, a gym class or whatever else takes your fancy, bone health is just another reason to keep moving. Please look after dem bones ☺️💪🏼☠️🚶🏃🏻‍♀️‍➡️🦴

At Milkwood, we believe it takes time to really hear your story, conduct a thorough assessment, and work out what YOUR ideal outcome is. That's why we have longer consult times, allowing us to spend the time you deserve without running behind. Your time is just as important as ours.

Are you feeling like it hurts literally everywhere? If you are experiencing dull, widespread pain that doesn't seem to relate to a particular posture or activity, there may be other body systems feeding into your pain. The effects of stress, nutrition, hormones and fatigue can have a significant influence on how you feel pain. If you're a woman over 40, it may be a sign to get your hormone levels checked. If your stress levels are high, your body may be trying to tell you to take a breath and reassess some things in your life. Perhaps you're not getting enough sleep, or you have a food intolerance you're not aware of? Is it time to see a naturopath?
