Satin Spar vs. Selenite: Are They the Same? Not Quite.

If you've ever picked up a beautiful, glowing white wand or tower labeled “Selenite,” chances are you’re actually holding Satin Spar. Confused? You’re not alone. These two crystal cousins are often mistaken for each other — and even sold under the same name — but they’re not exactly the same thing.

Let’s clear the air (and the energy) and explore what sets them apart.

✧ The Crystal Connection: A Shared Family

Both Satin Spar and Selenite belong to the gypsum family, a soft and delicate mineral group known for its calming and cleansing properties. They share the same chemical composition (calcium sulfate dihydrate), but their crystal structure and appearance are where the magic (and difference) lies.

🌙 Satin Spar: The Silky Glow

Appearance: Satin Spar is fibrous, opaque to translucent, and often shaped into rods, towers, wands, or spheres. It has a beautiful silky sheen or chatoyancy that almost shimmers when you move it in the light.

Texture: Smooth and soft to the touch, often with visible fine striations running along its length.

Common Use: Most "Selenite" wands, bowls, and charging plates are actually Satin Spar due to its durability and polishability.

🌕 Selenite: The True Transparent Beauty

Appearance: True Selenite is transparent to translucent with a glassy or icy look. It's usually found in flat, plate-like formations or as large natural sheets.

Texture: More fragile and can cleave or flake easily. It’s not often carved into shapes because of its delicate nature.

Rarity: True Selenite is less common in the commercial market and tends to be a collector's piece.

Behind the Scenes at Blue Lotus Wellness

If things have seemed a little quiet on my social media lately, it’s because life behind the scenes has been anything but! ✨

I’ve been deep in preparation mode — organising markets to showcase my beautiful wares, placing big orders to restock your favourites (and bring in some exciting new pieces!), and sourcing incredible new suppliers from across Australia and overseas. It’s been a whirlwind of boxes, bubble wrap, and crystal sparkle!

I’m also thrilled to share that I’ll be expanding into another gorgeous collective space – in Blackwood, opening this August! This new location will stock a wide selection of Blue Lotus crystals and is a beautiful new opportunity to connect with more of you in person. Stay tuned for opening day updates and sneak peeks.

After an incredible (and exhausting!) two-day event with Queen of Wands Psychic Fair, I took a much-needed breather to rest and recharge. Thank you to everyone who stopped by — your energy and support mean the world.

Stop.
Putting.
Rocks.

We love rocks.
We mine them. We sell them.
But we do not shrine them in the love canal.
It's not a pocket.

Here’s why:
Most rocks are porous = microbial swamp
Selenite dissolves. It's literal drywall.
“Natural” ≠ sterile or safe
Your vag is not a rock tumbler or a crystal cavern

🧠 From a science educator, geology nerd, and uterus-haver:

You can honor crystals.
You can wear them.
You can even name your cat after one.

But do not:

🚫 Stuff selenite
🚫 Fall for Etsy metaphysical suppositories

✨ Protect the sacred shrine. Don’t put sediment near your cervix!

Your reproductive meat temple deserves better than a trip to emergency room and you having to explain how you got a rock splinter in there.
