Mastitis can be tough, but with the right approach, it’s manageable! We know that early intervention is key and can avoid further complications so staying proactive is important. Some early signs of mastitis include:
- breast pain
- redness and warmth (can be on 1 breast only)
- flu like symptoms (fevers, chills)
- breast swelling or lumps

Mastitis can be caused by a number of factors such as:
- incorrect attachment
- decreased breastmilk removal
- oversupply
- sore or damaged ni***es
- weaning breastfeeding too fast

Key aspects of management include:
- continue to remove breastmilk or breastfeed
- correct contributing factor if known
- apply cool compress to breast to assist with swelling
- taking regular pain-relief/anti-inflammatories

Don’t forget to rest and hydrate - your body needs it! If symptoms persist, reaching out for support is important! 💚

Pain and discomfort when breastfeeding is common in the first few weeks postpartum. Although common, it is not normal. Persistent ni**le pain is unfortunately one of the biggest reasons for families to stop breastfeeding before they planned.

Timely support is vital for achieving breastfeeding and lactation goals!

When booking an appointment with Haven, a thorough history and examination will be performed to identify potential causes of pain.

A treatment plan is made with evidence based research that works for you and your family.

Did you know there are many ways to feel reassured that your baby is getting enough breastmilk from the breast?

Some reassuring and normal signs to look for are:
- Growing out of clothing into the next size
- Having plenty of wet and dirty nappies
- Meeting developmental milestones
- Waking to feed approximately 8-12 (sometimes more) times in 24 hours
- Settling between feeds (even for short periods)
- Gaining weight, growing in length and head circumference

It is normal for babies to wake frequently to feed, have fussy periods, cluster feed and STILL get enough milk when breastfeeding!

Babies breastfeed for more than just hunger, they love to breastfeed for comfort and bonding too!

It is never too soon to reach out for support when it comes to breastfeeding. If you are sitting there thinking “I am struggling” “I don’t know if I can do this any longer” - these are your cues.

No matter where you are in your feeding journey, we are always here to help 💚

Did you know?

Fat is the most variable constituent of breast milk and is essential for immunity, digestion and central nervous system development. The concentration of fat in breastmilk is related to the degree of breast fullness. The concentration of fat is lower when the breast is most full and increases as the breast is drained.

It is impossible to say however at what point during the breastfeed the fat content changes. What we do know is that the more a baby feeds from the breast the more fat and energy-rich breastmilk they consume!

If you have ever used a breast pump, currently using a breast pump or going to a breast pump - this one is for you!

One of the most important steps when using an electric or manual breast pump is to ensure you have the correct fl**ge size. The fl**ge is the part of the pump that is placed against your breast, seen above in Nicole’s hand.

The diameter of your ni**le should be measured to fit the diameter of the centre of the fl**ge. If the fl**ge is too small it can cause ni**le/ar**la pain/damage and decrease the amount of breastmilk volume removed. If the fl**ge is too big it may slip off the breast, pull too much breast tissue into the fl**ge, decrease stimulation and therefore decrease the amount of breastmilk volume removed.

If you already own a breast pump and the fl**ge size is incorrect, we stock replacement fl**ge sizes and fl**ge inserts to make for a smaller size. Further information available on our website www.havenpregnancylactation.com.au

Balancing breastfeeding during the Christmas holidays can be quite challenging!

- Consider finding a quiet spot where you and your baby can have a peaceful moment together whilst breastfeeding during gatherings.
- Consider wearing your baby in a carrier to prevent over handling and early identification of feeding cues. Also makes it easier to be hands free!
- Family and friends might be curious or offer unsolicited advice about breastfeeding, have polite responses ready to steer the conversation in a positive direction.
- With the weather looking quite warm over the next week, do not be concerned if your baby wants to feed more often but for shorter periods. Breastfeeding is their source of hydration too and breastmilk is perfect for your baby in the heat.
- Finally, look after yourself! Ensure adequate hydration and good food to maintain energy and that breastfeeding thirst!

Wishing you and your families joyful and relaxing Christmas holidays this season! Remember we will still be available for appointments over the next two weeks. Merry Christmas from Nicole and Sam at Haven Pregnancy & Lactation! 🎅🏻💚

Did you know?

Montgomery glands, also known as Montgomery tubercles or follicles, become enlarged during pregnancy and lactation. They help to lubricate and protect the ni**le with the glands secreting oil that assists in preventing bacteria from entering breastmilk. You might see these glands as small bumps around the ar**la. The size and number will vary for everyone.

Beginning within minutes after birth, they further produce a scent that helps babies find the ni**le and attach to the breast! How amazing is the body! It is therefore important to avoid soaps or harsh substances around the breasts to maintain the integrity of the skin and glands.
