Hooray your child is turning 1! This has been a very big year for your baby. They have learnt som much in only 12 months. Here are some things to expect with communication by 12 months of age:

- your child will point or wave. Some children can give ‘high 5’ or ‘knuckles’

- you will see your child dancing (bopping) to music

- understands simple words. For example, “bye” (will wave), “where’s Mum?” (Will look around for Mum)

- you will hear some first words, the word will be different depending on the different words your child has heard in their environment, and what they are interested in. Some children say “Mum” and some say “dog” first. My daughter’s first word was “hat”! Whatever the first word is, it is a joyous occasion.

If you haven’t heard any words yet, don’t panic. Some children do take a little longer than others to start talking. Keep being with a talking to your baby, that is the best thing you can do!

Most babies say their first words between 12 and 18 months of age. However, you’ll start to notice the early signs of communication shortly after birth.

7 to 9 months:
-looks at you when you call their name.

-Stops for a moment when you say, “No.”

-Babbles long strings of sounds, like mamamama, upup, or babababa.

-Looks for loved ones when upset.

-Raises arms to be picked up.

-Recognizes the names of some people and objects.

-Pushes away unwanted objects.

You can help your baby develop their communication by encouraging their interaction attempts. Copy them when they say their long strings of sounds, smile, and pretend you are in a conversation together. Most of all, enjoy this time with your baby!

Over the next few weeks, we will be posting the milestones that we typically look out for in a child’s communication development. Hit ‘follow’ if you don’t want to miss these.

Most babies say their first words between 12 and 18 months of age. However, you’ll start to notice the early signs of communication shortly after birth.

4 to 6 months
From 4 to 6 months you should notice that your baby is becoming more and more interactive.

They will:
Giggle and laugh.

Respond to facial expressions.

Look at objects of interest and follow objects with their eyes.

React to toys that make sounds, like those with bells or music.

Vocalise during play or with objects in mouth.

Vocalise different vowel sounds—sometimes combined with a consonant—like uuuuuummm, aaaaaaagoo, or daaaaaaaaaa.

Blows “raspberries.”

You can help your baby develop their communication by encouraging their interaction attempts. Talk back to them, smile, copy the sounds that they make.

This is the early stages of conversations.

Most of all, enjoy this time with your baby!

Over the next few weeks, we will be posting the milestones that we typically look out for in a child’s communication development. Hit ‘follow’ if you don’t want to miss these.

Good news!

Studies have demonstrated that the use of AAC does not interfere with speech development and actually has been shown to support such development.

Do you want to kick start your toddlers communication ability? Then take a look at AAC. Introducing signing to young children has been shown to support and enhance langauge learning. It is more accessable to young children to use their hands to 'say' a word than to coordinate their breath, voice, tongue, jaw, and lips together to form a word.

"More" and "Finished" are powerful signs to start with as you use them all the time eg. during meal times, bath time and when playing. Let me know in the comments if you would like a video of how to sign a few words.

Evidence today suggests that it is critical that AAC be introduced before communication failure occurs. Giving a child the ability to communicate (even if it is not with verbal speech) has positive impacts on their communication development, well-being and relationships. AAC is not only for the older child who has failed at speech development but also for a young child during the period when he or she is just developing communication and language skills.

Your Speech Pathologist might talk to you about introducing signs, choice boards or other ways to encourage communication. At Sound Bites, communication is the goal - no matter how we get there!

🎉 October is AAC Awareness Month! 🎉

What is AAC? 🤔 AAC is when a person uses something other than speech to communicate. This could include body movements or gestures, sign language, computers or devices, or communication books and other printed materials. 📚💻

Many people use AAC to communicate, including those with:

- Autism

- Intellectual Disabilities

- Motor difficulties

- Disabilities caused by stroke or other neurological conditions

There is growing evidence that using AAC can enhance the development of spoken communication. 🗣️✨

There are many types of AAC, and your Speech Pathologist can help you decide which one is right for your child. Some examples include:

- Speech generating devices 🎙️

- Mainstream devices 📱

- Paper-based systems 📖

- Signing 👐

- Alternative access systems 🔑

At Sound Bites, many of our clients use a type of AAC, and we love that it gives children the opportunity to communicate with others. ❤️🗨️
