‘Normal’ Doesn’t Always Mean Healthy — Here’s Why..

Just because your blood tests are “within range” doesn’t mean your body is functioning at its best.

If you are sick of feeling like s**t, always finding yourself sick, struggling to recover, constantly feeling fatigued, low mood, always bloated, craving sugar, suffer from digestive issues and nutrient deficiencies despite eating well, if you are being told that everything is all normal in your bloods, it's time to look at your bloods from a functional lens and learn the difference between normal vs optimal.

If your blood tests are being overlooked as they are 'technically normal' it's time that we talked and took a deeper look at things and what your results are really trying to tell you!!

It's one month left until winter is over and its time you get your health sorted.

Got some recent blood pathology that you would like me to look over and analysis for you from more of an optimal health perspective....

Take advantage NOW and Save 15% on my Nutritional Analysis of Pathology Results service for just $84 for a limited time ONLY!

If you don't have any recent blood tests and not feeling your most optimal health and would like to get some done, no worries I can order them for you or alternatively give you a list to take with you to your GP.

For more info on this service or book in this service, send me a DM.

Have You Ever Been to Have Blood Tests Done, To Be Told That Everything Is All Fine and There is Nothing Wrong with You,...
03/07/2025

Have You Ever Been to Have Blood Tests Done, To Be Told That Everything Is All Fine and There is Nothing Wrong with You, Yet You Still FEEL LIKE S**T? 😞😞

Maybe you are always getting sick, feel wiped of energy, feel bloated all the time, have cravings, struggle to lose weight despite all your efforts, or just feel completely run down and not well.

If your results are within the broad reference range that is specified, your doctor will likely tell you that everything is all normal and there is nothing wrong.

Now this can be frustrating 😡and confusing to a patient who knows her or his body and just knows that something is not right, despite what they have been told.

The reason this does occur more often than not, is that your doctor is looking for a disease state and something that can be treated with a pill. If all your numbers are sitting somewhere in the lab reference range that is supplied, even if it's only just sitting in the range, sometimes even just outside the range, this is quite often not seen as a concern and often not even mentioned.

The problem with this is, that while your numbers may sit somewhere in between one end of the reference range to the other, this reference range is usually quite broad. If a reference range is 50-300, and you are sitting at the lower end of the range, you cannot possibly feel the same as a person whose numbers are sitting at the other end of the reference range. 🤔It's just way too broad.

And let me tell you something else....the lab reference ranges that are used by your doctor to determine your state of health, are really not even a good indicator of health!!

Let me tell you why??

Reference ranges used with conventional blood pathology lab testing have been determined by a statistical average of an unhealthy population.
Hence the reason why going by the reference range that is supplied alone, may not be the best indicator of health, nor may it give answers to why you feel the way you do.

We really need to be looking that bit deeper in blood test results...

So, while your numbers may be in the lab reference range, the question may lie in where they are sitting, as to if you are optimal. This could really make a huge difference.

I always tell my patients to always get a print out copy of your blood test results from your doctor👩‍🔬

I don’t want to know that your doctor said you are all fine, yet when I ask you what your vitamin D level is, you have no idea and no results to show. This is why it's so important to get a copy.

Our general bloods can tell us so much about our health and can be a great reference to approach more as a preventative, rather than waiting until a disease state is present.

This is why I always encourage my patients to get their bloods done, when working together.

If that still doesn’t give us a clear indication on why you may be feeling a certain way, I as a clinical nutritionist have access to a number of more extensive integrative functional medicine lab tests, that you cannot access through your gp. There may be a specific test that may be best suited for further investigations into your health.

These test methods may include comprehensive stool tests, urine tests, breath tests and hair mineral tests etc. These tests look at health on a deeper level, are much more extensive and can really tell us a lot about one's health when all conventional approaches have come back with little answers.

If you have some blood tests that you would like me to review, or maybe you have a health concern that you have had tests for to help determine what is going on, to be returned with little answers, why not start by booking a Nutritional Analysis of Blood Pathology Review where you can get a thorough review of your bloods from more of an optimal health perspective using functional lab reference ranges and get a written report of my findings.

If you don't feel right with your health, struggling with your weight or a health concern with little to no answers as to the cause, it's time to take action and not just accept that nothing is wrong and there is nothing that can be done.

Let's find the root cause!

Did you know that 70-80% of your immune system is found in your gut? 😮

How healthy is your gut?

If your gut health is poor, you may find yourself being that person who tends to get sick easily. 🤧

If this is you, it might be time to look inward and focus on supporting your gut.

So, what are some simple tips you can start doing today to improve the health of your gut? 🤷‍♀️

🌟 Eat more plants- we need to aim to reduce the acidity in our diet. Eating a rainbow full of fruit and veg will supply the body lots of antioxidants which will fight against inflammation.

🌟 Getting adequate amounts of healthy fats in the diet- avocado, fatty fish, extra virgin olive oil, unrefined coconut oil, nuts and seeds and olives.

🌟Avoid eating on the run or in a stressed state- shuts off digestion.

🌟 Cut back on inflammatory foods including sugar, processed packaged foods and meats, refined carbohydrates, gluten and dairy.

🌟 Cut back on alcohol and coffee (opt for a herbal tea- a good coffee substitute is dandelion tea)

🌟 Adequate water intake to flush out toxins

🌟 Finding a way to better manage stress- meditation, yoga, tapping, having a relaxing bath etc.

🌟 Don’t forget to get some movement in your day- go for a walk, run, put on a you tube exercise routine to follow etc.

🌟 Avoiding unnecessary antibiotic use

Got any questions or would like some more help with this, let me know and I would be happy to help.

Did You Know..??? that even with regular daily ☀️ sun exposure, you can still have less than optimal Vitamin D levels.🤷‍♀️

While low sun exposure is often a common cause, there are a number of other reasons other than not enough sun exposure that can effect your ability to absorb Vitamin D.

Some of these causes are as follows:

☀️ Darker skin tone- may require a longer length of time in the sun to absorb vitamin D through your skin. Due to the higher melanin content in skin of darker skin toned people, uvb radiation is much harder to absorb compared to fair skin tones.

☀️ Fat Malaborption Issues- you have an inability to properly absorb fats, which is commonly seen with gut health issues such as leaky gut, celiac disease or gastrointestinal disorders like IBD.

☀️ Certain Medications- such as steriods, heartburn medication & anticonvulsants can also affect your ability to convert vitamin D obtained from the sun or foods into its active form to be used by the body.

☀️ Older Age- the elderly are at a higher risk due to less sun exposure & older adults may also have more health problems, digestive function may also alow down with age, which can have a direct effect on absorption of fats.

☀️ Gallbladder Removal- if you have had your gallbladder removed you are missing the bile needed to absorb this fat soluble vitamin. It might be a good idea to take digestive enzymes to help improve the absorption of fats.

☀️ Breastfeeding- increases need for extra vitamin D as breastfeeding your baby, sucks all of your vitamins and minerals out of you.

🌟 Certain Medical Conditions- all digestive health issues, kidney disorders, liver disease and obesity etc.

If you can say any of the above are you or if you think you might have less than optimal vitamin D levels, it might be worth looking at supplementing with vitamin D. This may be especially important in winter when sun exposure is limited.

If you want to work out the most appropriate dose for you, I suggest you get a vitamin D blood test done.

Needing further help with this?

Book in for a Nutritional Analysis of Blood Pathology Review and I can have a good look over your bloods to help you identify imbalances in nutrients and blood pathology markers that your doctor may have just skimmed over and told you everything was all fine!

Your Secret Weapon This Winter...Beat the Winter Blues and Sniffles with Optimal Vitamin D Levels.

Do you know where your levels are at??

If you are feeling the effect that winter is having on your Immunity, Low Moods, Fatigue, No Motivation.......it's time to check your vitamin D levels!

Having optimal Vitamin D levels will not only help with immunity but also may help us avoid suffering from low moods due to seasonal affective disorder.

Many people in Australia are sitting well below optimal levels for good health.

Vitamin D levels also naturally drop in winter with lower sun exposure and not being able to get outside as much.

Depending on the lab used, 50 nmol/L to 70 nmol/L tends to be classed as adequate in medical terms but from more of a therapeutic level we should be aiming for 100 nmol/L for healthy individuals and if you have any chronic health conditions above 100 and up to 150 nmol/L is the aim.

Where are you currently sitting?

Could supplementing with Vitamin D be of benefit to you this winter?

If you have had some recent bloods done and would like an overview from a nutritional functional pathology perspective, feel free to reach out.

I can help you work out whether you need to supplement with Vitamin D and if so, the appropriate dose.

What did you have for dinner on this cold wintery night?

One meal that our family is loving at the moment is butter chicken.

If you are a client of mine, you would know how much we go on about adding veggies to every meal.

The other thing we talk about is preferably making meals from scratch where possible, avoiding processed packaged foods as much as possible (with the exception of some brands which may have cleaner ingredients, if you need something quick on a busy weeknight).

If you are wanting a clean butter chicken sauce recipe that is quick and easy to put together look no further than my butter chicken sauce.

All that is required to make the sauce is full fat coconut cream or coconut milk in a tin, tomato paste, fresh ginger, garlic, garam masala spice mix, paprika, chilli or cayenne pepper, ghee or pure butter and salt and pepper to taste.

Chuck all ingredients into a blender (minus the butter or ghee) to mix together and then use the ghee or butter to cook your chicken and veg in on the pan, before adding the sauce to the pan.

Can be served with rice or even goes nice with cauliflower rice.

If you would like the recipe for my butter chicken dish let me know in the comments.

My Story

I’m Sarah Horgan, an Adelaide based Accredited Nutritional Medicine Practitioner, a Step Mum and founder of Nutritious Vitality. My mission is to educate and inspire you to take control of your health so you can be the best version of you!

I have worked in the health and wellness industry for over 13 years. While my background is working as a beauty, skin and spa therapist, I have continued to grow my interest in health, wellness, natural therapies and how the body works, over the years. After also having struggled with some of my own health issues, I went on to study Nutritional Medicine, where today I now practice as a Nutritional Medicine Practitioner and Health Coach.

A BIT ABOUT MY HEALTH STRUGGLES:

My whole life I have always been of a smaller build and never had to worry about my weight. Although I have never eaten terrible, I never really ever had to worry about the food choices I was making because I didn’t put on weight. Well that’s what I though, until I started suffering some of my own health issues over the years from stubborn acne, to terrible inflamed dermatitis, digestive issues for many years and more recently recognised hormonal imbalances, all of which are influenced by diet, which strongly influences the health of the gut. The health of your gut influences the state of your overall health.
