BREASTFEEDING 🌸

"A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three." — Grantly Dick-Read

The benefits of breastfeeding are endless, the way in which your breastmilk alters it's composition in response to the needs of your baby is miraculous and emotional completeness felt by a breastfed baby is undeniable🌿

There are ways you can encourage your chances of a successful breastfeeding journey:

🌸Prepare for breastfeeding like you prepare for birth ; gather knowledge, tools and support and prepare your body and mind

🌸 Physiological births promote breastfeeding, aim for this ( you CAN successfully breastfeed after a caesarean too, it might just take a little more work)

🌸 Source a great lactation consultant BEFORE you need them

🌸 Indulge in your golden hour

🌸 Skin to skin

🌸 Encourage oxytocin and melatonin (seek darkness, privacy and surround yourself with things that make you feel all the love 💘)

🌸Seek assistance from a naturopath and/or nutritionist for food and herbs which will assist milk and those to avoid

With all of this being said, if breastfeeding doesn't happen for you. This is okay. 💫

This post is without judgement.

If you cannot or do not want to breastfeed your baby knows how much you love them.

If breastfeeding brings you trauma or is impacting your mental wellbeing or you just don't like it then stop.

Breastfeeding and bottle feeding are hard and consuming. There is no easy way to be a mother🤍

If your baby will be bottle fed I urge you to research the formula you're providing and look into glass bottles

POSTPARTUM 🌝

A moment in time where everything slows down and speeds up at the same time. Where you don't know if it's possible to fall any deeper in love or be more exhausted.

A moment of transition. Self exploration. Healing and growing.

A moment in time to be honoured.

In many cultures around the world women honour this process for 40 days (or more). Surrendering to matrescence. Committing to rest and bonding.

While this may not be something you can practically achieve in our culture, vow to s l o w down and allow your body time to heal and your spirit time to transcend into your new role as mum.

The best way to do this is to prepare.

It is difficult to enjoy a journey when it begins with trauma. Do what you can to have a positive birth experience.

Prepare food and help ahead of time. Accept offers of assistance and ask for or hire extra.

Try to get outside when you can, nature is a special kind of magic full of ways to assist your postpartum.

Discuss expectations and boundaries ahead of time. Visitors. Time for yourself. Roles within your family. Other children. Communication. Night wakes. Uphold these boundaries.

If in doubt, hire a postpartum doula. These humans are incredible and will guide you through this moment in time 🌼

"There is a phase in labor, appropriately called transition, where a woman will meet her breaking point.

She’ll feel as though she just can’t go on, and she is right. The maiden in her is not strong enough for the task at hand.

It’s during this time the maiden dies so that the woman can be reborn as a mother, with her child.

A new, more capable version of herself with far more strength than she has ever known. From maiden to mother"
- Carley Mendes

When will my baby come? ⏳

It's a great question. One that every expectant mother has. Here's the answer - they will come when it's the right time.

There is not a single person who has figured this out yet. There is no test or assessment that can indicate when your baby will come.

A term baby is one who has reached 37 weeks up until 42 weeks. That's 5 whole weeks for your baby to arrive 'safely'. There is a lot of variation in that time. One 37 week baby may be able to breath on their own, latch effectively and have plenty of fat to keep them warm while others are not ready yet.

There is one theory, I like this one, that there is something excreted by the baby which is the catalyst for labour. Babies could perhaps initiate the whole thing when they are ready.
Perhaps they're ready for the world or in other cases perhaps they need a little help from the world.

Be kind to yourself, your body and your baby. Trust in the process. Trust in the magic of labour and birth. You were perfectly designed for this mama. Your baby will come at the right time.

For the already mothers: when did your baby/babies arrive? Mine were 40+6 and 39 weeks. Two whole weeks different and yet they were the same length, within 200g of each other and my 39weeker latched straight away while my 40+6er took a couple of days to latch effectively.
