But if the purpose is making progress rather than “feeling like I’m working hard”

Then put your ego away and rest properly, you’ll get where you want to go quicker (unless you’re an endurance athlete!)

But hitting the basic lifts again and again will probably get you further in the long run than constantly changing to the new cool looking, complex exercise

In a rehab context, try and reproduce the same movement that you’re trying get to; but @ 10% of the load. Work up from there and you’ll be fine!
