Support the Petition: Advocate for a Better Enclosure and Shelter for Amor and Avis
Recent photos of Amor and Avis, the beloved Maremmas of the Middle Island Penguin Project have sparked widespread concern within the Maremma community and maremma rescue organisations across the country. These images reveal a small, inadequate enclosure overrun with weeds and faeces, along with inappropriate shelter conditions, completely unsuitable for this unique and noble breed. The Warrnambool community is equally dismayed, voicing their outrage over the unacceptable treatment of their cherished Maremmas.
The Reality Behind the Photos
These photos, taken on a 30-degree day, show Amor and Avis confined to a substandard environment. Their only water sources were old plastic tubs sitting in direct sunlight, potentially compromising the quality and safety of their drinking water. Overgrown weeds pose a serious risk of grass seed injuries, which can lead to significant health complications for the dogs.
The provided shelter is entirely inappropriate for Maremmas, who dislike small, enclosed spaces. Amor’s visible refusal to use the structure, instead seeking shade outside, is a testament to this. Maremmas instinctively prefer large, open shelters that allow them visibility in all directions—critical for their sense of security and alignment with their natural behaviors.
Council’s Responsibility and Failure
As stewards of these Maremmas, the Warrnambool City Council has a duty to provide environments that meet the breed’s specific needs. Their current management reflects a lack of understanding of the requirements of Maremmas, whose welfare depends on proper care and facilities that respect their instincts.
Although the council claims that Amor and Avis are not kept in this enclosure full-time, it is deeply troubling that they find it acceptable for the dogs to spend any time in such conditions.
Amor and Avis are educational ambassadors for an animal/wildlife conservation project, yet their own living conditions undermine the very principles of dignity and respect the project seeks to promote. This glaring contradiction must be addressed to ensure their well-being and preserve the integrity of the project.
Take Action
Please support this petition to demand better for Amor and Avis.
