The Victorian Government is proposing to make some changes around the Grand Prix which could increase the period the park is used from 7 up to 21 days. The Government is calling for public feedback via the link below. We strongly encourage parkrun participants to submit feedback and have detailed the Event Teamโ€™s position below.

https://engage.vic.gov.au/the-australian-grands-prix-amendment-bill-2025

Feedback closes August 11.

The position of our parkrun event team is that we have safely and successfully operated parkrun during the Grand Prix set up for the past 14 years. In the last few years, in particular, we have greatly valued the cooperation we have received from the Australian Grand Prix Corporation in maintaining access to the Lakeside path.

The Lakeside path is clearly an important recreational facility for local residents and the event team believe that, with continued planning and cooperation, it should be possible to maintain access to the path throughout the entire buildup period for the Grand Prix. It is therefore our hope that access to the Lakeside path can be maintained under similar conditions as has been the case to date, allowing parkrun to operate during the Grand Prix set up period.

The following is the text from a letter we received:

โ€œThe Victorian Government is progressing amendments to the Australian Grands Prix Act 1994 (the Act). The amendments are:

1. Extend the race period from 7 days to up to 21 days, with options for public and tenant access to Albert Park during this time
2. Address changes in Australian Grand Prix Corporationโ€™s (AGPCโ€™s) insignia and intellectual property
3. Increase the legislated payment to Parks Victoria (PV)
4. Enable AGPC to host non-motor sport events
5. Improve corporate governance settings.

The Victorian Government plans to introduce the Bill into Parliament soon, and it is proposed to commence before the 2026 Grand Prix.

Extended race period

In order to create a safer and more secure environment for all park users, the Victorian Government is planning to extend the race period from 7 days to up to 21 days, with options for public and tenant access to Albert Park during this time. This will allow essential works to occur for the Grand Prix within a controlled environment.

From the 2026 Grand Prix, it is proposed that:

โ€ข parts of Albert Park will be closed to the public for up to 21 days
โ€ข most sporting club tenants and businesses can still access Albert Park for the additional (up to) 14 days through special arrangements with the AGPC
โ€ข some businesses and sports clubs near Albert Park Lake will close for the
additional (up to) 14 days.

In most instances, a majority of tenants will not be any further impacted by the
extended race period. For those tenants that are affected, AGPC will put in place measures to assist with this (i.e., accreditation / access provided for administrative or operational purposes).

This proposal aims to balance AGPCโ€™s access needs for the Grand Prix with the need to limit impacts on Albert Park tenants, including sports clubs and businesses.

It is intended that operational access arrangements in Albert Park will continue to be managed by AGPC in consultation with the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events to ensure any impacts from the extended race period are managed (as is done so under current arrangements).

More information about the extended race period and the other amendments are available at https://engage.vic.gov.au/the-australian-grands-prix-amendment-bill-2025, where you are also invited to provide feedback on the Billโ€™s impacts on your organisation. You are also invited to advise how these arrangements could be best implemented.

Your feedback will help inform future advice to the Victorian Government on the Bill.โ€
