Have a 2 year old who’s sleep is tricky?

😩parents taking out of their cots too soon
😩reliant on feeds/co sleeping or rocking for sleep
😩sibling and other changes like starting childcare
😩stalling at bedtime
😩challenging behaviour
😩sleeping in different care environments
😩reliant on milk/removal of milk
😩lack boundaries around sleep
😩fussy eating behaviour
😩parents unsure how to deal with pushback and big emotions around their child’s sleep

This episode deep dives into why these challenges are so hard for families and a step by step framework for you to implement so everyone in your family gets more sleep.

3 mistakes you might be making when removing the dummy ❌

1. Removing the dummy at the start at the wrong time of day
2. Not settling up all the other parts to be 100% correct for sleep. Eg you’re child is still overtired, feeding less than ideally or inconsistent naps
3. Not being consistent with the removal and doing it “slowly”.

Dummies can stay from 8 months to 3 years old BUT they need to be 100% functional which means your child needs to be able to replace it themselves in their sleep space every time.

Teach your child to replace the dummy so it is functional or it might be the right time to get rid of it

Comment “YES”below if you have a love/hate relationship with your child’s dummy 👇🏼

You decide something needs to change with your child’s sleep so you put them in their cot and start either patting or sitting beside your child’s cot. It gets too much so you leave the room but come back for another round of the same! ♻️

BUT it all turns to 💩and your child cries and screams. Inevitably you give up because they seem distressed and you certainly are

Sound familiar?

What have I missed you think? Why doesn’t my child want to or like their cot!🛏️

Well..mumma you arent alone! You have missed several crucial steps that need to put into place BEFORE we even go near that cot!

1. Environment. Are they too hot, too cold, too loud or stimulating? Ensure the environment is 100% in line with sleep before the cot is introduced

2. Nap durations and times. If you’re child isn’t adequately rested they are likely to resist the cot. Being under or overtired needs to be addressed first

3. Comfortability. How much time have they spent there and how comfortable is your child in Their cot?

4. What is your child reliant on for sleep? If they are reliant on something or someone putting them to sleep, putting them in the cot won’t fix this!

5. Something else? Dont attempt putting your child in the cot if they are teething, sick or experiencing big changes like moving house

My advice is forget the cot for now, thats the LAST step in the settling process if you want better sleep. Spend time correcting these 5 elements and only then think about putting your child in the cot for sleep🙏

Still this can be hard for parents! For me, i find supporting families to get their children into the cot to be completely seamless😇

If you want support with this just like 👍this post and we can start chatting via DM about your struggles with the cot⭐️

“What is the 1 thing that will improve my child’s sleep?”

I get asked this ALL the time from strangers when they ask me what I do! They say “So what is the secret to getting a child to sleep or improving my child’s sleep?”

The answer is…DO NOT let your child get overtired!❌

Thats right, if you can prevent this on a daily basis with your baby or toddler you will see many benefits. These benefits are:
✅they will go to sleep more easily for naps
✅there will be less or no bedtime resistance and bedtime will be enjoyable and smooth
✅you will experience less night wakes
✅you will say goodbye to Early Rising

How amazing does this sound!? Easy, stress free bedtimes, more sleep, easy settles, no early rising! Hooray..

Now the next question you would be thinking is…how do i actually prevent overtiredness?

Listen to the episode 50 🚀to learn more about preventing overtiredness for your child and you will get 6 practical tips that will help prevent your child from getting overtired and ultimately get more sleep!

On average, families report that they spend AT LEAST 3 hours of time in their day settling and resettling their child before we meet. And that doesn’t include nighttime! 😱Thats 21 hours a week rocking, feeding them repeatedly to sleep, swapping out with your partner or sitting with them until they go to sleep! Just recently, I got a 8month old doing a beautiful 2 hour nap in the morning and 1.5hr nap in the afternoon in their COT. With NO setting required from mum so she now has that time to work and do household chores🎉 I don’t just give the gift of sleep, give the gift of TIME to families so they can spend it however they want to! 💃. Comment “TIME” below if you want less settling and more time in your day

Here are 8 steps I took to get my baby to sleep through the night!🙌

1. I researched and made a plan for my baby’s sleep before he had even arrived! I had no village so took a realistic approach to my situation and learnt about the difficulties of baby sleep📖

2. Established feeding🍼. My baby slept through at 9w old and there were no solids in sight! Established full feeds rather than snack feeding

3. Utilised all the options for naps! 🚗I taught him to sleep in pram/car/cot/carrier/porta cot/car. This meant I never missed a nap and avoided overtiredness

4. Stuck to an appropriate nap/feed schedule📝. From about 5 weeks old, I stuck to appropriate awake times for his age and fed away from sleep so he wasnt dependant on this for sleep. I also never let him get overtired which meant smooth naps and nights.

5. I prioritised sleep👍. I left parties early, got to mother’s group early to get a nap in the pram around the block, took a Porta cot to family Christmas or booked flights around my son’s sleep.

6. I replicated his sleep space using the positive sleep associations, no matter where we were to encourage the onset of sleep💤🎆

7. I researched and dressed him optimally for sleep. I dressed him adequately to avoid cold wakes🌤️

8. We had a structured and organised bedtime routine from Day 1. Bedtimes were hard as a newborn but I persisted soon these positive sleep associations were working and the timing was ideal and they were smooth!🐣

✨This baby went from waking 10+ a night to going to sleep for the first time in their cot independently in just 13 minutes! ✨

This baby was intensely feeding ALL night and co sleeping, but actually not getting much sleep!

Feeding to sleep in the day but only achieving catnaps. Something needed to change for baby and Mumma! 🚀
He wasnt able to get through 1 hour at night without waking and sucking. Mum is exhausted and baby is so overtired and only having milk snack feeds.

Enter NiGHT 6…the GAMECHANGER night! ♻️
After 6 days of reducing the level of support (but STILL in arms) for the day, still feeding overnight but using other methods to support at night, ensuring milk and solids were at the right time, dressing bubs correctly, strategies so he felt comfortable in his cot and setting up environment to be 100% correct for sleep….

Last night he is put into his cot wide awake. I am on the phone with family, and he takes him self to sleep in just 13 MINUTES! No distress no fan fare. And wakes up so happy at 7am! 😍

The next day, he smashes out a 2 HOUR nap in his own cot! 👏 No distress, no resettling necessary!

This my friends is like magic! ✨
How can a baby go from being so hard to get to sleep at night, waking repeatedly and co sleeping to THIS!

Let me show you! I’ve been doing it for 6.5 years and I can do this for you too! 🚀

🚨This episode of Holistic Baby and Toddler Sleep Podcast has gone off with hundreds of downloads already!🚀I am sure you have heard the term, “never wake a sleeping baby”. However, this my friends is not correct! If we allow a child to sleep as long as they want to for some nap/s it can affect other elements to a successful 24 hour sleep cycle. A child can only sleep a certain amount (depending on their age and their own sleep needs), and just because we may enjoy the 2 hour break in the middle of the day it doesnt mean they are capable of sleeping that duration of nap AND a full 12 hours over night. If your child is above 4 months old and you are wanting to start establishing a regular feeding and sleep routine OR if you are having issues with night waking, early rising or long naps…listen up! Too much day sleep can result in: 😢difficulty settling your child at bedtime😢experiencing night wakes. 😢or early rising But how do you fix these issues?! This can be the tricky part. The podcast breaks down the solution to your current sleep issues might actually be to wake your child during the day! Listen here to find out if this is the case for YOU! https://open.spotify.com/episode/2qkGkIdj2YYLcfG3i7mOOH?si=JjxfDoUeSo2bXbyBLPOZPg
