Relearning boundaries is often a key part of the healing process. When you grow up with dysfunctional relationships as your primary source of learning, you can find yourself naturally drawn to similar relational dynamics in a subconscious attempt to heal that core wound.
This can result in attracting people into your life who don’t honour or care for you in the way you deserve.
As you heal, you learn to recognise healthy relating, and anything that isn’t that is no longer acceptable to you.
It gets complicated however, when you love and care for the people who are dishonouring you.
Setting boundaries with these people can be hard, because you know it may hurt them to experience your no, when previously you would have said yes. But despite this, it’s essential for your healing that you do.
By setting firm boundaries, you’re teaching people how to love you in a new & healthier way. Whether or not they choose to grow and evolve into this new way of being is their choice.
The key concept to hold in mind as you try out this new way of being is that strong boundaries, love and compassion can all sit side by side. In fact, it’s essential for the health of your relationships that they do.
