My story. What is an End of Life Doula?

Whilst I remain impassioned about ageing and aged care, after many years in the industry as a Registered Nurse Clinical Manager I have finally found my life path in End of Life care. I feel privileged to also have been a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care for many years however Palliative Care has resource (human) limitations and is not always an available service to all who need it. I am a graduate of the Diploma of Counselling and have completed End of Life Doula education and certification through Helen Callanan at Preparing The Way. My role is to provide support and assist all fellow human beings both young and old as they approach the end of their life. I will also give support, unconditional love and respect to the care givers / significant others involved in care of the dying. I feel drawn to those people who are socially, environmentally and financially disadvantaged, in particular those who are homeless or without family.

An End of Life Doula is there on the ground providing assistance, information, options for care and unconditional respect and positive regard for someone nearing the end of their life and those around them. The choice made for active (cure focused) or supportive (palliative) care is that of the person who has a life-limiting illness and as such underpins the role of the End of Life companion. End of life can be a confusing and often frightening time for someone who is dying and also for those around them. An End of Life companion is a source of support when making tough decisions, will support the decision making by providing information and an objective perspective on the outcome of the decision, can create a sense of calm when all seems chaotic, brings a normality to dying, death and grief.
