Its Winter Solstice - its been a week!! This morning I was online ordering Dried Herbs from my usual supplier and I noticed how dramatically their website had changed, how there is almost nothing available anymore. Ive been using this site on and off for years. A lot of the medicinal herbs are not even on the site anymore, and the ones that still are I am astounded at how much they are to buy - even at wholesale price!!!! I was looking for Goldenseal, a sacred & now rare herb which is one of the most valuable Herbs pertaining to its potent Berberines.
Berberines being the powerful active ingredients in treatment for resistant bacterial & fungal infections of the Gastrointestional Tract, they are are Antibiotics in their natural form and a Primary Herb for the Liver, which no surprises here, you struggle to find infornation of this connection these days.
I am in Peri-Menopause and working with the Digestive issues that come along at this time - Bloating, Constipation and putting on weight if I have a drink of water!!!
Hormones have a strong effect on the motility of the Gastrointestional tract & when levels of estrogen & progesterone change, bowel patterns change too. Estrogen is a gastrointestional stimulant & varying levels may swing you from loose to dry stools. Also our Livers become extermely stressed during this time - your Liver among other things is a recycling centre, it breaks down hormones circulatinig in the blood that are no longer needed & during Menopause & peri Menopause LH & FSH are produced in massive amounts adding to the workload of the Liver- which means it has less energy to focus on Metabolism & elimination of food, hence weight gain, bloating & constipation.

So I want to say two things-
First that Goldenseal is a Primary Herb for supporting the Liver. The magic is in the name - it seals the membranse of the Liver cells with Gold - protecting the Liver from all of the toxins, chemicals & debri that it is constantly cleaning up for us every second of our lives. When Liver cells are protected from the toxins - they work better, Liver function improves, digestion & assimilation of waste become more optimal & Digestive issues become less of a problem.
And....... if you have Books on Herbs, Textbooks, the old book you found at the Secondhand bookshop that was written in the 60's 70's or 80's, Home Remedies & Folklore Medicines - DO NOT EVER SELL THEM !! Keep them for your children - they are priceless. They were potentially written when the real information was still being shared about the Medicinal Properties of Herbs. I began my studies of Naturopathy in 1999 and some of the books I was told to seek out are now rare, ridiculously expensive or unavailable. Information on Herbs depicted in Herbals and others in the materia medica books with traditional medical remedies, protocols & procedures. Very different information to what is available today.
Ive included a picture of what I consider one of the best books on Menopause ever written by Susan S. W**d - first published in 1986 The Menopausal Years - Wise Woman Ways. It has information on Herbs, Homeopathics and other medicines & protocols & is written with love and for protection of Women as they navigate the Menopausal Years.
