August is designated as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month in Australia, just as it is in many other countries, to raise awareness about the importance of vision care and eye safety for children.

This initiative aims to educate parents, caregivers, and educators on the significance of early detection and intervention for eye conditions and to promote practices that protect children’s eyes from injury.

Conditions to be aware of:
· Early Detection and Intervention: Many eye conditions, such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (crossed eyes), and refractive errors, can be effectively treated if identified early in a child’s life.
· Eye Safety Practices: This includes educating children about potential eye hazards, promoting the use of protective eyewear during sports and recreational activities, and ensuring safe handling of toys and household items.
· Digital Eye Strain: With increased screen time, it’s important to educate parents on the potential impact of digital devices on children’s vision and encourage strategies to minimize eye strain.
· UV Protection: Children’s eyes are particularly susceptible to damage from UV radiation, so it’s important to teach them about the importance of wearing sunglasses and hats to protect their eyes from the sun.
· Comprehensive Eye Exams: Regular eye exams are crucial for children, even if they don’t show any obvious signs of vision problems. These exams can help detect underlying issues and ensure optimal vision development.
· Raising Awareness: Organisations like Prevent Blindness provide resources and information on children’s eye health and safety, including toolkits, fact sheets, and webinars.

By observing Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, we can work together to ensure that all children have the opportunity to develop healthy vision and reach their full potential.

July, 13 – 19 July is National Diabetes Week in Australia and highlights the critical link between diabetes and eye health, emphasising the importance of regular eye checks for those with diabetes.

Diabetic Retinopathy: Protecting Your Vision Through Early Detection

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness among working-age Australians. Fortunately, its onset can often be prevented—or its progression slowed—through early detection and effective management.

Diabetes affects the body’s ability to properly use and store sugar, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. Over time, this excess sugar can damage blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when this damage affects the retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that’s vital for vision. Without treatment, the condition can lead to irreversible vision loss or even blindness.

As of 2021, around 1 in 20 Australians (5.1%, or just over 1.3 million people) were living with diagnosed diabetes. This includes type 1, type 2, and other forms of diabetes, but excludes gestational diabetes.

The good news is that many early symptoms of diabetic retinopathy can be managed or even reversed with prompt treatment and good blood sugar control. That’s why it’s crucial for people with diabetes—whether or not they have any current vision issues—to have a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year.

And remember: even if you don’t have diabetes, regular eye checks are essential for maintaining overall eye and health wellbeing. Our optometrists are here to help keep your vision clear—and your body healthy.
