HišŸ‘‹
There seems to be a few people recently visiting my socials, I thought it was about time I re-introduced myself (it's been a long time! I'm terrible at social media....).

I'm Dr Naomi - Ballarat born and raised, I left for Adelaide after finishing highschool, to study medicine at the University of Adelaide. I ended up spending 12 years in South Australia, finishing med school, working as a junior doctor in hospitals there (in Adelaide and Port Augusta), spending 2 years working specifically in Obstetrics/Gynaecology and Paediatrics, during which time I completed diplomas in obstetrics/gynaecology (DRANZCOG) and Child Health (DCH), before moving from the hospitals into the community and completing the requirements to become a fellowed General Practitioner (FRACGP). But it was after having my own first child that I developed a passion for breastfeeding medicine and infant sleep/settling. After my second child was born, I pursued further study in these areas (which were bascially non-existant during medical training and even the diplomas) through, what was then called, "the Possums clinic" (founded by Dr Pamela Douglas), completing the requirements to be accredited as a Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC) practitioner through Possums (now the NDC Institute).

This passion has led me away from mainstream General Pracitice, and into practice focused exclusively on perinatal and infant health - including:
> Preconception (pre-pregnancy) planning
> Pregnancy (antenatal and postnatal) care, including pregnancy shared care (accredited through Grampians Health)
> Newborn and infant care, including feeding, sleeping and settling, gut-health concerns (including CMPI) and general well-baby check-ups (including 6 week checks) - and I take a neuroprotective developmental care approach to this care, which is evidence-based and biologically-aligned šŸ˜€
> Breastfeeding/lactation consultations 🤱 (but also very happy to address concerns or questions related to bottle feedingšŸ‘©ā€šŸ¼) - I'm hopefully not far off now from being certified as an IBCLC

To do these things well, takes time... time that isn't generally available in a standard GP appointment. This is one of the reasons I decided to branch out into something different. Now all my new patient appointments are 60-90 minutes, allowing time for the thorough, holistic approach that I think these things need and deserve! But because I am a GP, everyone who holds a Medicare care can access Medicare rebates, which subsidise the cost for my appointments, and no referral is required!

Working out of The Centre For Perinatal Health & Parenting. Ballarat, VIC means that these long appointments are provided in a beautiful, comfortable and designed-for-just-this environment! I'll have to post some photos of my room and the space here...it's just beautiful - you might not want to leave! šŸ˜‰

And I have availability as early as next week at the time of posting this, so currently no long waits to get an appointment.

Let me know - is there anything else you'd like to know about me or what I offer here? šŸ§šŸ’ā€ā™€ļø

🫶🫶There is so much in pregnancy and childbirth that can feel out of our control. But there is also so much that we can plan for and optimise, given the opportunity. A dedicated pre-pregnancy planning appointment allows time and space to identify any factors which may increase risk to you or a future baby, and then to address these by optimising health and wellbeing, discussing adjustments to lifestyle factors and medications, and arranging any tests for genetic screening and other factors if necessary and desired. It also allows discussion around the "when", "where", "how" of pregnancy and childbirth, and it gives you an opportunity to bring any questions and concerns you might have around conception, pregnancy, childbirth and infant care.

'Ballarat Mums & Babies Clinic' is now closed as I change pace for a bit, to welcome baby number 3 into our family in May (*unless this little one decides to make an early entrance of course!).

Hopefully this isn't coming as *new* news for those who continue to see me presently! But BIG apologies if it is - I had hoped to post an announcement on social media well before now!

I had big plans for using this page a lot more than I have (which, given only one previous post, isn't saying much!). But I guess life is just hectic, and this has well and truly fallen down the priority list. We'll see what the future holds!

But for now, I just want to say a HUGE thank-you to all of you who have come to see me over the past 3 years - whether during pregnancy, or with your baby, or for pre-conception counselling. It has been such a privilege to be part of your journey (and I really hope I was of some assistance!). A special thank-you to those who have seen me over perhaps several consultations, affording me the privilege to follow you through your pregnancy or see your baby grow up over months or even a couple of years - this is always such a joy to be part of!

And thank-you also to those who have supported me in other capacities over the life (so far) of my clinic. It was a bit of a leap of faith when I decided to try something different and open this mums & babies clinic 3 years ago, and I have learnt SO MUCH (about so many things!) in this time. Special thank-you to Ballarat Group Practice and Health First Medical Group for allowing me the space within your clinics to try something new.

Wherever you are in life, particularly if you are a mother or mother-to-be, keep going! You're doing an amazing job! I hope you have a community around you supporting and cheering you on, and simply being there with you through it all. 🄰

To those looking for ongoing support regarding maternal and infant care, including feeding, sleeping and settling, I'd encourage you to check out Possums Online: https://possumsonline.com/

Hi guys! šŸ‘‹
I thought it was high-time that I introduced myself properly, here on Insta..

I’m Naomi - the founder (and currently sole practitioner) of ā€˜Ballarat Mums & Babies Clinic’.

I’m a doctor (GP), an accredited pregnancy shared care provider here in Ballarat, and an accredited Neuroprotective Developmental Care (NDC, or ā€œPossumsā€) practitioner.

And I’m a mum myself - I have two busy children, currently 3 and 5 years old.

I am passionate about the wellbeing, care and support of mums and mums-to-be (along with their families) and about biologically-aligned and evidence-based care of babies. I’m passionate about breastfeeding – but I’m also here to support whatever form of feeding you choose or require for your own baby. I’m passionate about a holistic approach to perinatal and infant care – this means not looking at just one part, but stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.

I want to help you to enjoy your baby and being a parent!

There is so much that fits into those statements above, and so much more I could say – but, for now, I’ll leave it there! But post a comment šŸ‘‡ if there’s anything you’d like to know about me that I’ve missed…

"...as much as I love being his mum, I’m not so enamoured by the institution of motherhood.

And I’ve discovered that I'm not so good at following its rules. Or its books. But what I once saw as failure, was in fact failure to comply to an imagined framework of impossible ideals written by somebody else."

It took becoming a mum, for me to finally find my rebellious side. I've been described as 'nice' and 'inoffensive' my entire life.

But with motherhood came a realisation, an awakening. Because as much as I love being his mum, I’m not so enamoured by the institution of motherhood.

And I’ve discovered that I'm not so good at following its rules. Or its books. But what I once saw as failure, was in fact failure to comply to an imagined framework of impossible ideals written by somebody else.

So, forgive me, but I will feed to sleep. I will rock to sleep. I will (god forbid) indulge in eye-contact with my child at bedtime.

I will embrace the danger nap.

I will skip a bath tonight if we are both beyond it.

I will let go of 'he should be doing this by now'.

I will stop beating myself up for not having arts and crafts available at every turn.

I will let him get bored occasionally.

I will let him snack just before meals to avoid the mother of all meltdowns. I will choose my battles.

I will buy the shop-bought cake.

I will incorporate 'lazy' moments into the course of our day, so that I am not left spent by the end of it.

I now revel in these quiet acts of rebellion; with the knowledge that he is fed, he is safe, he is LOVED.

And I am sane.
