Today is National Sorry Day. We remember and commemorate the mistreatment of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as the stolen generation . We acknowledge the strength of the stolen generation survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process.

BWHC are grateful to our volunteers Gaythaa Darwish Fajloun and Randa Kabalan for your ongoing dedication, reliability, and support to the Bankstown Womens Health ‘Food Share Program’. You both give your valuable time to the community without expecting anything in return . The Food share program is only possible because of your ongoing regular weekly commitment, which involves the hard work of packing and unpacking large boxes and pallets of food. We thank you, our dedicated community leaders.

This is good news.

BREAKING: Queensland will introduce legislation to make coercive control a criminal offence by the end of 2023 and today I’m announcing an historic overhaul of laws to better protect Queenslanders.

My government has heard. My government has listened. My government is acting.

Coercive control is the most common factor leading up to intimate partner homicide. By the end of next year, we will introduce legislation to criminalise it.

The overhaul of laws and practices to better protect Queensland women from domestic and family violence and hold perpetrators to account also includes:

◽️ New laws and programs to recognise and prevent coercive control including making coercive control a criminal offence
◽️ A Commission of Inquiry into police responses to domestic and family violence
◽️ Expansion of the Domestic and Family Violence courts
◽️ Better support for women
◽️ A special strategy for First Nations communities
◽️ Funding for perpetrator programs to change men’s behaviour and stop the cycle of violence
◽️ Expansion of High-Risk Teams and co-responder models to ensure victims receive a joint response from police and domestic and family violence services
◽️ Increased respectful relationships education to all Queensland children and young people

So far 18 women have been killed in domestic homicides in Australia this year. That’s one woman every single week.

Today on Domestic Violence Remembrance Day we remember each and every person who has lost their life as a result of domestic violence. Tonight, we light a candle for each and everyone of them.

Remember support is available. Our trauma specialist counsellors are here 24/7 on 1800 FULL STOP (1800 385 578) and online. Please reach out if you, or somebody you know has been impacted by domestic and family violence.
