Here at Bargo Doctors, we would like to highlight the importance of September as the month of Prostate Cancer Awareness.
It is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with an increased risk for men over the age of 50 or with previous family history.
Each year in Australia over 25,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is estimated that a male has an 18% risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85.
Prostate cancer develops when abnormal cells in the prostate, a small walnut-sized gland found only in men, grow uncontrollably and form a malignant tumour.
Symptoms to be aware of prostate cancer include:
- Frequent urination
- Urgent and sudden need to urinate
- Difficulty urinating
- Weaker than normal stream
- Painful ej*******on
- Blood in urine or semen
- Erectile dysfunction
Males over the age of 50 should discuss prostate cancer with their doctor and be screened for the disease on an annual basis. This can be done through a simple PSA blood test, which checks for elevated levels of prostate-specific antigen (a protein produced by both cancerous and non-cancerous tissue in the prostate).
