You can’t pour from an empty cup - but in hospo, we’ve been trying to for too long!
Every January, we talk about staff wellbeing, culture, retention. But we skip the critical first step: leadership wellbeing.
Here’s what I’m seeing in Tasmanian hospitality right now:
∙Leaders working 60-80 hour weeks as standard
∙Decision-making while exhausted (which costs money & people)
∙Zero buffer when the inevitable crisis hits
∙“I’ll rest when it’s quieter” (spoiler: it never is)
The data is clear: burnt-out leaders create burnt-out teams. You can’t manage psychosocial risks for your staff when you’re drowning yourself.
This year, we’re doing something different. Not wellness programs. Not generic self-care advice.
We’re building pressure-proof leadership - practical systems that help hospo leaders manage their own wellbeing in the chaos, not after it.
Because sustainable hospitality starts with sustainable leadership.
What’s one thing you’re doing differently this year to protect your own capacity?
