If your back keeps flaring up, it might not be weakness, it could be a core that isn’t switching on when you need it most.
Back pain is often linked to areas of joint restriction or stiffness in the spine and pelvis that limit normal movement and place extra stress on surrounding muscles, discs, and nerves. When a joint isn’t moving well, nearby muscles tighten or over-work to compensate, which can lead to recurring tension and reduced flexibility. Chiropractic care helps restore healthier joint motion and reduce mechanical irritation so the body can move more freely.

For longer-term change, the body also needs muscular support, this is where the core becomes essential. The core is not just your “six-pack” muscles. It is a deep, 360-degree support system made up of:
• Abdominals: act like a natural corset around the waist
• Spinal stabilisers: support each spinal segment
• Diaphragm: your primary breathing muscle at the base of the ribs
• Pelvic floor: muscles at the base of the pelvis that assist with stability and continence
• Glutes and hip stabilisers: provide power and balance for movement

Together, these muscles create an internal brace that supports the spine before you even consciously move. When they are weak, poorly timed, or fatigued, the lower back often carries more load than it should, increasing the likelihood of stiffness or flare-ups.

• Breathe low and slow — allow your belly and lower ribs to gently expand as you inhale.
• On the exhale, lightly draw your lower abdomen inward (about 20–30% effort, not forceful).
• Keep breathing normally — if you’re holding your breath, you’re bracing too hard.
• Practise during daily tasks like getting out of a chair, lifting groceries, or rolling in bed.
• Focus on endurance and consistency rather than intensity.

Chiropractic adjustments help restore movement where joints are restricted, while core activation and strengthening help maintain those improvements by providing stability between visits. When mobility and muscular control work together, the spine is better supported, movements feel smoother, and the frequency and intensity of back pain episodes often reduce.

Dr Lindy – Research Lover and Keeper of the Clinic Threshold

Lindy’s biggest surprise this year was discovering that research now shows chiropractic care performs better than past back pain guidelines.
Her quirky ritual is treating the clinic doorway as a threshold. When she walks through it, her personal life stays outside so she can be fully present. A favourite moment was hearing that two tradies argued on a work site about who had the better chiropractor, only to discover they both come to Balanced for Life.
She is grateful for every client whose journey she gets to share and proud of moments where care makes a real and lasting difference. She loves that the team feels like a family and jokes that everyone knows exactly who ate the chocolate.
Her Christmas tip is to “eat the things” because it is once a year and then move your butt. She is loving vitamin D and omega 3 for better brain clarity and her favourite snack right now is cherries. She loves the beach and possibly her new favourite sport, pickleball.

Pavle – The Storyteller and Wave Chasing Thinker

Pavle’s favourite moment this year came from a patient admiring our clinic Christmas tree filled with patient photos and realising they are part of something much bigger.
He has improved his ability to teach through stories and metaphors and had the aha moment that patients need consistent, simple education to remember why their care matters. He loves knowing the team has his back, and he is inspired by patients who regain well-being and use it to enjoy life again.
His wellness habit is a morning glass of water and his favourite recovery ritual is a walk with Lindy after work.

His festive guilty pleasure? CARBS… the comfort, the joy, the bliss.

Jin starts every shift with stretching and exercise (we’re inspired… but still not doing it). His funniest patient comment of the year? Being told his treatment room is a “torture chamber” , lovingly, of course.
His biggest clinical insight was the power of educating clients in simple, clear ways, and his biggest lesson was focusing on what the patient truly wants. He loves our team’s positive energy and constant smiles.

Robin – Creative Genius and Alpaca Enthusiast

Robin’s heart was warmed when a patient told her they booked specifically on her work days. She has spent one year with B4L and describes her learning experience as everything. Few know that she has a genuine obsession with alpacas.
She has refined her medical illustration skills and discovered a powerful truth. Mindset is everything. She is inspired by patients who put in the effort outside the clinic, especially with exercises and lifestyle changes.
Her Christmas tip is simple. Take the family out for a walk between all the sitting and eating. She loves tuning into her body each morning to notice how she feels. Her favourite childhood Christmas memory is a snowy Canadian Christmas with skiing, cocoa by the fire and peaceful snow falling at night. Her festive indulgence is egg nog and she is not ashamed of it.
