🐾 Dachshund Friday 🐾

It's been a Dachshund month here .physio - what is it with October and IVDD?!

Meet Cannoli, Ivy and Penny, my Friyay crew representing the Dachshund's of Melbourne.

All dealing with varying levels of IVDD, some needing surgery to recover and others managing with conservative management.

Happy to say that all three are doing so well - kudos to their people for the hard yards they are putting in for their beloved and quite often spicey canine companions!

But I am going home with all 10 fingers still attached - quite the feat with the appetites this trio bring to their physiotherapy sessions 😅🐾

Got love the ❤️ and 🌶 of a Daschhund!

Happy Friday everyone 🥳

🖤 National Black Dog Day 🖤

Here's to all the dark of coat, the long and the short hair, the smooth and the curly...

The jet black to those with a white toe, sock or two, three or four...

Those with a black as goal face and to those who have earned their salty faces...

To the black dogs we share our lives with.

We see you and we 🖤 you!

Can you imagine it's been three years already?!

Three years since our Hydro Physio underwater treadmill was delivered and settled in...

Six years since I completed (with blood, sweat and yes, tears - damn you Excel spreadsheets ) my MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy - looking at the long term outcomes of cranial cruciate injury in dogs ( result - 30% have signs of chronic pain several years after, even with surgery...)

Seven years since I completed my PGDip in Veterinary Physiotherapy - how I miss those two years working alongside other amazing Vet Physios to be - all around the world from University of Liverpool! With the goal of ACPAT - The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy membership in sight - the whole reason I chose to study physiotherapy 22 (yikes!) years ago.

And a grand 18 years since I graduated with my BSc in Physiotherapy from University College Dublin - my favourite part of my undergraduate degree was my research study looking at repeatability of the equine gait, using the physiotherapy school's motion analysis equipment on the vet school horses - just amazing. I think my supervisor was a bit stunned to see my interest in physiotherapy go through the roof - all I needed was an animal to focus me!

I needed this boost after some tough conversations today 😢... but that's life eh...gotta get through the ruff days to really enjoy the great days - e.g. getting dogs back walking and enjoying life post spinal surgery, makes the challenges all worth while!

Gorgeous Coco 😍

Coco is lucky, her physiotherapist comes to him!

Coco had a hindlimb amputation after unfortunate complications post orthopaedic surgery.

Coco is doing super dooper now on three limbs - he does get a little sore in his back, thoracolumbar spine, due to his new 'tripawd' gait pattern - there is an adjustment period whilst the body adapts to moving in a new way.

But adaptable the body is, incredibly so - amd there is nothing like seeing a tripawd animal adapt to what we humans can really struggle with.

So, with hands on manual therapy, a little photobiomodulation (laser therapy), exercise therapy, trimming paw pad fur (those hairy border collie paw pads!!) along with lots of knowledge sharing and support- that physiotherapy for you.

Super work Coco - keep on managing those birds in the garden, keeping on top of your companion's antics and bringing your lovely family endless joy and fun!

🐾 Maggie 🐾

This song is PERFECT for this social butterfly - just perfect.

Maggie is the shiniest (or fluffiest) and happiest 'person' out there - her energy and enthusiasm are just infectious!

Maggie had surgery to manage grade 3 patella luxation in her hindlimb back in May, unfortunately she had a set back in her recovery post op., perhaps a slip, and unfortunately pulled up lame again.

So off to physiotherapy she went, after a thorough nose to tail assessment, once we had our problem list drawn up (main issues as per her family, functional limitations and impairments identified), a physiotherapy plan was set up and off we go...

In order of importance:

🐾 Education for the family about how to manage her at home

🐾 Hands on therapy - soft tissue work, myofascial and trigger point release, manual therapy

🐾 Exercise based therapy

🐾 Laser therapy

🐾 More education!

🐾 Aquatic physiotherapy AKA hydrotherapy - hands on of course!

She is doing really well now, she has a nice spring in her step and challenging her lovely people to keep up with her!

Super work Maggie ❤️

🐾❤️ International Dog Day ❤️ 🐾

Celebrating a special day to honour those special ones who make our lives ✨️ that bit more - or, for many of us, might be the reason we get out of bed in the morning 🌄.

For those hounds, the long legged and the short, the long lush coats and the coarse brindle fur, the pups and the senior pawtizens, from the workers & the athletes to those with scars and disability. They all matter. The puppy eyed and the grey of face.

My ❤️ is a bit heavy of late, so we have lost a few very special souls who I was honoured to spend time with, and get to know. Along with their people holding the other end of the leash, the harness.

Today, when taking a moment to simply celebrate our dogs, I especially think of those who have recently received heavy news about their beloved hounds health, those who are getting ready to make the toughest and most important decisions soon, for their best friend 😔.

I think of her with the new diagnosis that is now life limiting, and of him whose time on earth with his special people will come to a close very soon 🌈.

I dont forget any of the 🐾 I have had the honour and privilage of working with over these last 10 years since I graduated from Liverpool University. 10 years, that's a lot of 🐾 to remember and honour.

All of these hounds shape their own special space in their people's ❤️, and in mine too.

For the love of a dog , there is nothing, nothing so incredible to know.

🐾 Woody 🐾

Gorgeous pup Woody has been attending physiotherapy regularly since he had FHO (femoral head and neck osteotomy) surgery in February.

This surgery involves surgical removal of the head of the femur, the 'ball' of the ball & socket joint of the hip, so the top of the femur (long thigh bone) is removed, allowing the body to create a new fibrous 'false' joint instead. Often done in salvage situations where the joint is severely damaged or diseased. Poor old Woody came to the rescue shelter with a very unhappy hip and was in need of help.

He is going super and using the operated hindlimb really well, no hopping for this boy as his foster carer (now very lucky guardian!) at the time got him started in physiotherapy early post op. which is great.

🙏 Thank you to the AAPS for giving him such a great second chance after a rough start in life and to this wonderful and dedicated foster carer for doing all the hard yards to get him to where he is and for offering him a forever home! I would have been next in line to take him home only I'll get in soooo much trouble with my better half if I start bringing my clients home 🫣😍😆.

👉 The earlier we see these guys post surgery the better, we have a 4 to 6 week 'window of opportunity' to really influence mobility of the new 'false' hip before it stiffens up too much. At the end of the day we want a new hip 'joint' with good stability so the dog can weight bear well and use the leg functionally, but also with enough range of motion to be able to move the leg throughout range to do all the amazing things pups do. Like get up to naughty things 🫣😆.

On a side note, please support your local rescue, they do such incredible work. The AAPS is a place very close to my ❤️ as I adopted my best boy Indie from there all those years ago in 2010, we enjoyed a fabulous 9 years together ❤️. So. Adopt don't shop!
