STUTTERING FAQs 🗣️

What is stuttering?🙊
Stuttering is a speech disorder characterised by prolongations, blocks, and/or repetitions of sounds, syllables, words, or phrases. Stuttering can manifest in various ways and may present differently for each individual who stutters. Stuttering can also cause physical behaviors such as facial or body tension, eye blinking, or other movements as the person struggles to speak.

What causes stuttering?💬
Stuttering is a neurological condition and is NOT caused by anxiety or nervousness, although anxiety can exacerbate stuttering. Studies have shown that stuttering tends to run in families.

Why should I take my child to speech therapy for their stutter? 📚
Here are a few reasons why you might consider taking your child to therapy:
🧸Early Intervention! The earlier a child begins therapy for stuttering, the better the chances for improvement.
💬Improving communication skills! Stuttering can affect a child's ability to communicate effectively with others, and therapy can assist your child in doing so.
🙅‍♀️Preventing negative feelings and attitudes! Children who stutter may experience negative emotions and attitudes related to their speech.
💟Supporting family members! Stuttering can affect not only the child but also their family members. Therapy will provide education and support for you as parents/caregivers on how to best support your child's communication development.

What is the Lidcombe Program? 🔊
The Lidcombe Program is an evidence-based treatment program for preschool-aged children who stutter. The program includes parent involvement, direct treatment, and positive reinforcement. The program has been shown to be effective in reducing stuttering in young children. It is typically administered over several months and parents are provided with ongoing support and training from a Speech Pathologist throughout the process.

Madi is a Lidcombe-trained Speech Pathologist who can facilitate your child's 'smooth speech' development at Ready Steady Speech.

One of the best parts about being a Speech Pathologist!

As much as I love spending time with and getting to know each of my little kiddos, it fills me with happiness when they 'graduate' from speech therapy.

After consistent weekly sessions and home practice, this little one was so proud of himself and all the fantastic sounds he had mastered. Well done, Alex!👏 But it's not goodbye (for now), I will see him again in 8 weeks for a review session.

Each child is so different, and the therapy process can take longer for one child than it does for another. But hang in there, your Speech Pathologist is doing everything they can to get them to 'Graduation Day' 🎓

Screening assessment for Kindergarteners! 🧸

Children grow up so fast! There are no shortages of developmental milestones that are expected as little ones grow up, and you’re not expected to know them all.
Having your child assessed by a Speech Pathologist will give you insight into how your child is developing in terms of their speech, language, fluency, voice, and social skills.

Ready Steady Speech offers screening services for children aged 3 to 6 years old. This is a once off session- no commitment and no waiting lists!

What's included?
The 45-minute appointment will consist of:
- Discussion with parent
- Articulation screener
- Expressive and receptive language screener
- Informal observation of fluency, voice, and social skills
- Summary report provided within 7 days

The summary report provided after your appointment will detail if your child is developing within the expected range, or if they need a little extra support.
The report can be passed on to Kinder teachers, 2023 school teachers, GP's, paediatricians, and other health care professionals to share your child's current communication skills.

Articulation intervention! AKA speech therapy. Speech therapy is more than just lisps, let's find out more...

Articulation is the formation of clear sounds in speech.

There are 44 sounds in the English language, and sometimes little ones need a bit of extra help to master them all.

Who needs articulation/speech therapy?
It's normal for toddlers to substitute, omit, or simplify certain sounds when talking as they are still learning mastering the art of speech. Typically, these errors start slowly resolving without any intervention over time. Different sounds are expected to be mastered at different ages, depending on the complexity of each sound. Little ones who don't meet the speech sound milestones, or are harder to understand than peers of the same age, would benefit from speech intervention. Check out the speech sound milestones published by Kid Sense https://childdevelopment.com.au/resources/child-development-charts/speech-sounds-developmental-chart/

When does my child need to engage in articulation/speech therapy?
If your child has not yet met the speech sound milestones expected for their age, early speech intervention is recommended. Producing speech sounds is highly habitual, so intervention has greater success when started at a young age, in order to break their speech habits as soon as possible. For example, training a 7-year old out of their speech errors is likely to take longer than a 3 or 4-year old. In saying that, you're never too old to engage in articulation/speech therapy!

What does articulation/speech therapy look like?
Fun! Articulation therapy, like many other things, are more successful when the child is engaged and having FUN. I always aim to discover each child's interests, and use them in games and activities in our sessions. I use lots of visual and auditory cues in my sessions, but have found each child responds to all cues differently. So it is definitely a matter of working out what works for YOUR child, and working with that.
High repetitions and practice, immediate and precise feedback, and an engaging activity is the perfect recipe for successful articulation therapy.

How can articulation intervention at Ready Steady Speech help?
Madi will be sure to provide all of the ingredients for a successful session as noted above. The specific approach used will depend on your child's specific difficulties and evidence-based practice. Madi will also provide parent coaching during the sessions, so that you feel comfortable using articulation cues and facilitating home practice between appointments- after all, practice is key!

Ready Steady Speech will facilitate your child's articulation development through direct intervention, parent education, home practice, and liaison with school or Kinder teachers.

Literacy intervention! Let me answer some frequently asked questions:

What is literacy?
Literacy is a broad term which describes the skills of reading and writing. The term encompasses everything from pre-literacy skills (rhyming, identifying sounds in words, letter knowledge, and print awareness) to spelling, to reading books.

How do you know if your child needs extra support?
Your child's school teacher is likely to have great insight into how they are performing with their current literacy curriculum. If your teacher has expressed concerns, or your child is not reaching the reading milestones, you might consider seeking a literacy assessment with a speech pathologist. Check out these reading milestones published by Kids Health https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/milestones.html

How can literacy intervention at Ready Steady Speech help?
Madi is a certified Sounds-Write practitioner and Speech Pathologist. The Sounds-Write programme is an evidence-based, systematic, synthetic phonics programme. It teaches all key elements of conceptual understanding, factual knowledge, and the essential skills necessary for learning to read and spell. The programme is suitable for all primary school-aged children, and is scaffolded to meet every individuals needs.

So how can literacy intervention help your child?
The ability to confidently read and write is essential in academic success and personal-social development. Identifying literacy difficulties and having access to early intervention is vital in achieving this.

Ready Steady Speech will facilitate your child's literacy development through direct intervention, parent education, home practice, and liaison with school teachers.
