Why when we are ‘old’ are we told to just live with pain? Its like its assumed that pain and old age MUST go together. Yes, our body’s ability to heal degrades as we age. Yes, injuries do tend to compound as we get older. Does that mean we should just do nothing about it and accept we just ‘live with pain?’.
A car can be high mileage and still run like new when its well maintained and looked after, so why can’t our body’s be the same? Obviously, the better we look after ourselves when young, translates into better health when we are older. Studies have shown though, its never to late to turn things around.
I frequently see elderly clients come in and say “I’m told to just live with the aches and pains”. But that’s no way to live your life! We can’t all be pain free, but we should aim to have the absolute minimum amount of pain in our lives!
Going back to the car analogy, as the vehicle gets older, the level of car also tends to increase, and yes requires more maintenance and the old new part, but there’s no reason it can’t keep running well. Why are our bodies and overall health treated so differently?
The reality is yes, you do need to be more proactive about your health and body as we get older, but our body still has the ability to heal and repair, so why not make the most of it whilst we can?
I regularly see clients with pain associated with osteoarthritis and other ‘old’ or ‘degenerative’ conditions. We can often provide relief and improve their quality of life. Which in turn lets them be more active and positive about life!
