This week is , a week to acknowledge and thank the three million unpaid carers who support Australians every day, who often do not get recognised for their tireless work. This year's theme "You are, know, or will be one" highlights how every person will be a carer at some point in their lives.
Australia has an aging population, and the care system is struggling to keep up to meet the needs of older Australians. The struggle is caused by a few factors including:
💚Australians living longer
💙Australian family sizes shrinking meaning there are fewer people to assist in caring roles
💚A shortage of aged care workers
💙63% of women now being in the workforce (when previously they typically helped care for older family members)
💚A delay in aged care Government funding
The delay in funding and shortage of paid care workers means that family members must fill this critical gap by becoming unpaid carers. They take on managing medications, attending appointments, meal preparations etc. This role is often juggled with employment and parenting responsibilities.
Many carers are sacrificing careers, income, superannuation, and their own health to care for their aging loved ones. Being a carer often results in reduced working hours and earning potential, as well as having to find alternate jobs that are flexible and accommodating to their caring responsibilities. A primary carer loses an average of close to $400,000 in lifetime earnings.
All these responsibilities and roles can lead to burnout for unpaid carers. The Carer Gateway program is an Australian Government program that provides free services and support for carers. They work with a range of health and carer organisations across Australia. Find more info here: https://www.carergateway.gov.au/
This week we advocate for better support for unpaid carers, and we continue to find sustainable solutions like respite care, flexible work, encouraging self care and support for carers rights.
Thank you to all the carers that continue to support and care for the millions of older Australians.🧡
