🌿 Emotions Are Held in the Body Too

In Chinese medicine, we don’t see the mind and body as separate — they’re two expressions of the same system, from the intangible to the physical.

When I’m working with someone experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD, or emotional overwhelm, I look at how the body might be holding tension, fear, grief, or hypervigilance — and where circulation, breath, or movement may be restricted as a result.

Acupuncture helps restore flow, regulate the nervous system, and create space to shift stuck emotional states. It can work amazingly alongside counselling and psychotherapeutic approaches, supporting deeper integration through the body itself.

You don’t have to “think” your way through everything. Sometimes, your body leads the way.

Acupuncture Isn’t Just About “Points”

There’s a widespread idea that acupuncture is simply about selecting the right points for your symptoms — but that’s a very modern interpretation.

In the original classical texts, like the Huang Di Nei Jing, acupuncture wasn’t primarily about “points.” It was about understanding and correcting obstructions in the tissue planes — restoring healthy circulation where the body had become restricted or stuck.

Pain and dysfunction often arise where flow has been compromised — whether it’s blood, lymph, or nerve signalling.

So in clinic, I don’t just pick points from a book. I work with your body to assess where things aren’t moving properly — and work to restore flow to get things back on track.

🧍‍♂️ Upper Back Pain? Look to the Front

If you’ve got that tight, sharp, aching pain between your shoulder blades — you know the one — your instinct might be to dig into it. But often, that’s the last place we want to work.

In many cases, upper back pain is caused by tightness through the chest and shoulders, especially in people with desk-based posture. When the pecs are shortened, they pull the shoulders forward and overload the muscles in your upper back, forcing them to do too much.

Instead of going straight to where it hurts, in the clinic, I find we often get better results by:
âś” Opening the front of the body
âś” Releasing tension around the shoulder and upper back
âś” Improving posture and mobility
âś” Supporting the nervous system

This principle applies to so many types of pain — the source is rarely where the symptom shows up.

Anxiety isn’t just in your head, your body is involved too.

From inflammation and gut imbalances to stress and poor circulation, there are many hidden causes behind why you might be feeling anxious.

In Chinese medicine, we work on anxiety by understanding the whole person — not just the symptoms. Acupuncture offers a personalised, body-based way to support your mental health.

If you’ve been living life around your migraine triggers—avoiding coffee, wine, chocolate, or anything delicious—you’re not alone.

But here’s something I want more people to understand:

Triggers aren’t the root cause.
They’re just the spark.

With the right care, your body can become less reactive.

My goal in treatment isn’t just symptom relief, it’s to help you get your freedom back—without living in fear of the next migraine.

Many migraine headache treatments aim at relieving the symptom of pain, but fail to address underlying issues.

It gets complicated when there are multiple root causes that can appear in different combinations for different people.

Behind most migraine patterns are deeper imbalances like:
→ Restricted circulation
→ Dysregulated nervous system
→ Hormonal imbalances
→ Gut dysbiosis
→ Inflammation

That’s why acupuncture for migraines takes a whole-body approach.

If you’re struggling with migraines, let’s find out if acupuncture can help…

When starting out with acupuncture, it's natural to wonder "how long will acupuncture take to work" and "how often do you need to come for treatments".

While there is no one size fits all answer, this post will give you an idea of acupuncture frequency and how that changes depending on what phase of treatment you may be in.

RELIEF PHASE is all about getting relief from intense and/or frequent symptoms. If you're in constant pain, suffering with daily symptoms that aren't going away, or have an acute injury or illness, this is typically where we'll start.

Treatments are closer together (2-3 times per week or more) to build up the accumulative effect of acupuncture relatively quickly.

In most cases, if the acupuncture is working for you, things will stabilise within weeks of beginning treatment and we can move into the next phase. Severe cases or circumstances may require us to maintain higher frequency for longer.

HEALING PHASE is time for us to work on supporting your body's ability to heal, repair and self-correct. Our job is to identify the underlying imbalances maintaining that internal environment and work towards restoring a healthier body ecology.

Treatment frequency can vary from twice weekly, to fortnightly.

This phase is the most variable as some mild conditions only need a few weeks to months of treatment before no longer requiring treatment, but more chronic and severe conditions may take years to change substantially.

MAINTENANCE PHASE is for anyone who has gone through either of the previous phases and likes acupuncture as part of their regular self-care. This can help with prevention and maintaining general health.

Athletes and high performers may also like to incorporate acupuncture for their recovery and to support performance optimisation.

It can also be for chronic cases that will need ongoing management of symptoms.

Frequency will depend on the person and their goals. Usually anywhere between weekly to monthly, or just as needed.

This would be ongoing, for as long as the person finds value in the treatments.

Most of us will experience lower back pain or tension at some point in our lives. For many it can be a constant thorn in your side, frustratingly holding you back from being as active as you'd like.

When someone is trying acupuncture for lower back pain, they often want to know what exercises and stretches they should be doing to help avoid lower back pain into the future.

Here's some key areas you should be thinking about (and they're not your lower back muscles):

1. HIP FLEXORS
These muscles are in the front of your hip and responsible for knee-to-chest motion. They get short when we sit. When chronically short they can pull your spine forward and impair our glutes. Stretch and lengthen these.

2. GLUTES
Your butt muscles. They don’t engage as well when we sit for long periods and when our hip flexors are tight. This means your back and hamstrings take extra load. Strengthen these.

3. CORE ABDOMINALS
Your abs, less your 6 pack, more the deeper layers. These are responsible for stabilising your spine. They will also be inhibited from sitting, improper breathing and stress. Engage and strengthen these (not with ab crunches).

If you’re dealing with lower back pain, exercises are important, but sometimes the pain limits what you can do. Acupuncture can support you to get more out of your exercises, and if you don't already have specific exercises, we can help guide you to what is appropriate for your situation.
