We often say we “accept” autism.
But in practice, we still expect children with Autism to adjust… almost all the time.
To sit longer.
To make eye contact.
To tolerate more.
To behave in ways that feel unnatural to them.
And when they can’t, we call it behavior.. Not distress, not overload, not exhaustion, Just behavior!
That shift in labeling changes everything. Because once it’s “behavior,”we try to fix the child, instead of understanding the environment.
This month isn’t about just learning what autism looks like. It’s about questioning how quickly we misunderstand it.
If you work with or parent a child on the spectrum, ask yourself honestly:
Do I respond to what I see…
or do I try to understand what’s underneath it?
