It was a real pleasure spending quality time with our hard-working North Queensland local Councillors at the recent LGAQ conference in Cairns.

I shared my workshop 'Dropping Anchor' which gave participants the knowledge and skills to better handle life's 'emotional storms'.

Tackling a big challenge means facing discomfort.

Introducing yourself to strangers, speaking in front of others, grieving a loved one or leaving an abusive relationship.

Personal growth means stepping away from comfort.

Avoiding discomfort keeps you safe - like a ship in the harbour.

But that's not what ships are for.

The answer is to make room for your discomfort, sit with it, drop the struggle, allow it to be there...

Then go ahead and do that challenging thing...

What's holding you back from stepping out of your comfort zone?

Trying new things, facing your fears?

You get hooked, right?

You believe your mind and the reasons it conjures up for why you shouldn't, can't, or shouldn't have to.

The answer is to unhook from these limiting thoughts.

"Thank you mind for reminding me of why I can't or shouldn't...but what I'm about to do is important to me. Step aside.

At least that's what I say.....

When I listen to the deafening concerns of men in my counselling practice, as they toil in the trenches everyday, this is what I hear...

Unrealistic work pressures.

Self-righteous management.

Over-promising at interview.

A deficit of trust.

The narcotic of hierarchy.

Staff pruning.

Work over family.

Dog eat dog.

Inadequate onboarding.

Job creep.

Helicopter leadership.

Disempowerment.

Profit first, people later (if at all).

Incessant self-promotion.

Just a number.

Favouritism.

Easily replaceable.

These are good men doing their best to provide for their families.

Big business, I urge you to do everything you can to treat your employees with worth, dignity & respect.

The very fabric of our society depends on these simple principles.

To all those men who've walked through these doors over the last month, I salute you.

For sharing your stories of trauma, fear, sadness and anger.

For having the courage to do something about it.

For having an awareness that your current actions are not moving you towards a meaningful life or closer to the person you want to be.

For putting in the work, the practice and techniques for self improvement.

For making room for your unpleasant and unhelpful thoughts rather than trying to escape, run from or avoid them.

For beginning to live your values.

You are all an inspiration...and the world is a better place because of it.

Guilt means I've done something bad.

Shame says I am bad.

Shame is simply a break in connection from those we dearly love.

Our pain tells us it's a connection worth fighting for.

Guilt tells us we need to treat others with respect and to repair social bonds.

The hurt we feel from guilt means we care about others.

Ask yourself how you can reach out and repair what is now in the past.
