I’m often asked how to choose between a shopping centre massage clinic and a personalised private studio.
Having worked 8 years in busy massage shops and the past 6 years running my own private studio, I thought I’d share a balanced perspective based on personal experience.
Both styles of massage have their own strengths — it really depends on what suits your body, lifestyle, expectations, and budget.
There’s no right or wrong when choosing a massage — it really depends on what your body, budget, and expectations are looking for.
Shopping centre massage clinics are convenient, fast, and often easier for last-minute bookings. If someone simply wants a quick shoulder rub after shopping or a basic relaxation session at a lower price point, they absolutely serve a purpose.
A private home studio works very differently. Appointments are slower paced, quieter, and usually tailored to the individual rather than following a fixed routine. Over time, the therapist gets to know your body patterns, pressure preferences, old injuries, stress habits, and even how your work or lifestyle affects your muscles. Treatment evolves with you instead of starting from zero every visit.
In a personalised studio setting, there is usually:
more one-on-one attention,
greater consistency of treatment quality,
longer-term care and follow-up.
a calmer, quieter environment,
flexible treatment styles adjusted to your condition on the day.
On the other hand, a small independent studio may:
- have limited appointment availability,
- require advance bookings.
- not offer health fund rebates or EFTPOS• cost more than quick shopping centre massages.
Neither model is “better” for everyone. Some people want convenience and speed. Some people value consistency, trust, privacy, and personalised care.
The most important thing is finding the right fit for your body and your lifestyle. 🌿
