Dr Robert Campbell and Dr Amelia Jardim are leading paediatric neurosurgeons, each having undertaken specialised paediatric training that has honed their skills to precision in this intricate field.

Their expertise offers the very best of surgical care for children with neurological disorders.

At BCNC, we believe navigating the complex landscape of paediatric neurosurgery requires more than just surgical prowess – it demands a profound understanding of the unique needs of young patients and their families.

Our paediatric surgeons, along with the rest of the nurses and staff, epitomise this understanding through their holistic approach that blends medical expertise with genuine compassion.

Every child, and every family that enters our centre is cared for with the utmost sensitivity, ensuring not just physical recovery, but emotional well-being too.

Acoustic neuroma, or vestibular schwannoma, is a non-cancerous tumour that develops on the main nerve responsible for transmitting sound and maintaining balance.

It usually occurs from Schwann cells and may grow slowly or not at all; however, in rare cases, it may develop rapidly and become large enough to interfere with the brain's vital functions and become life-threatening.

The main symptoms associated with this condition include hearing loss, ringing in the ear, loss of balance, and facial numbness or loss of muscle movement.

It's important to immediately see your doctor if you notice hearing loss in one ear or unsteadiness.

Early diagnosis of an acoustic neuroma is vital to prevent serious damage and severe complications.

Hemifacial spasm is a disorder that occurs in the nervous system, causing the muscles on one side of your face to twitch involuntarily.

This typically happens when a nerve is compressed by an artery within an area of the head.

Common symptoms of hemifacial spasm include twitching or contracting of muscles in the face that are usually:

• On one side of the face
• Uncontrollable
• Painless

These spasms come and go during the early stages, but will begin to occur constantly over the course of several months to a few years.

At BCNC, we offer surgery for patients who cannot tolerate first-line therapies (i.e. injections) for hemifacial spasm.

Our expert neurosurgeons understand the complexity and delicacy of brain surgery and always strive to provide patients with the best chance of successful treatment with minimal risk of complications.

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, see your doctor immediately and request a referral before booking an appointment with us.

Undergoing surgery can be a challenging experience for many people, hence, making it essential that you are as mentally and physically prepared as possible prior to surgery.

Here are some tips to help you be prepared before your surgery.

• Preparing yourself mentally for surgery includes making sure that someone will take care of all your other out-of-hospital commitments so that you can focus on your recovery.

• Ensure that you arrange transportation to the hospital before your surgery day since driving yourself back home may not always be permitted after surgery.

• To facilitate a speedy recovery, being in the best possible health before surgery is vital. Make sure to eat healthy foods and be physically active prior to your surgery.

• Stop using ni****ne products or smoking to avoid or increase any risk of complications after surgery.

• If you take certain medicines, please check with your doctor if you should cease consumption before your surgery.

At BCNC, to make sure the entire process runs smoothly for you, our theatre bookings team will make all the arrangements.

You should receive an admission letter that contains details about admission times, fasting, your anaesthetists and a quote for your procedure.

The hospital where you are booked for your surgery will also require you to complete some paperwork.

On the morning of February 22nd, exciting things happened at the Mater and BCNC.

Training commenced for the Visualase Laser Therapy (LITT) robotic surgical technique.

This is the first intracranial laser in Australia – a minimally invasive alternative to open procedures, making surgical targeting more accurate, safer and less invasive than traditional techniques.

This robot-based technique has the potential to offer revolutionary surgical treatment pathways for patients with brain tumours and some types of epilepsy.

It also offers the potential for the development of novel techniques for treatment of a range of other diseases.

Skull base surgery mainly focuses on treating conditions, mostly tumours, that grow in the hard to access spaces between the skull and the brain.

Skull base surgery is commonly performed by a team of surgeons, commonly a neurosurgeon and an ENT specialist.

Conditions requiring skull base surgery include but are not limited to meningiomas, schwannomas that grow on the nerves that leave the base of the brain, and occasionally infections or blood vessel conditions.

This surgery is usually complex and requires special additional training in order to be able to perform it safely and effectively.

At BCNC, skull base surgery is one of our fields of expertise.
