If you think you have hormonal acne, a blood test and/or saliva test can help you confirm it ✔️ test, don’t guess!

Common blood tests I run in clinic:
For women:
Menstrual cycle DAY 3 hormones (the day is super important!!): you want LH, FSH, estradiol, SHBG, testosterone, f testosterone, IGF-1 + other hormones like prolactin, cortisol & insulin
+
Cycle day 21 (if having a regular 28 day cycle): progesterone, estradiol & SHBG

For men:
All of the above but the timing doesn’t matter, it just needs to be fasting 🤌

I often recommend functional saliva or dried urine testing if I suspect an estrogen dominance issue, as it will look at all 3 estrogens, not just the one in a blood test.

Estro dominance symptoms look like: dull, congested, irritated skin with brain fog, mood changes and heavy periods.

It’s great to set a baseline in the beginning, so you can retest after treatment to ensure things are back in balance. 👸

Stop ignoring the little things 😶‍🌫️ adaption and normalisation is real!!

When a symptom is mild but persistent, we adjust.

How many of you just “have a dodgy tummy”, or “are always tired”?

We hold such value to being able to just get on with it, and we have so many distractions that can drown our health issues away.

We also haven’t been taught how to interpret these physical signals -
although I have - so let me teach you!

this is why being prescribed hormonal contraceptive for period pain as a blanket prescription makes my eyes roll 🙄

Things that help period pain:
✔️ Anti-inflammatory way of eating
✔️ Prioritising self care
✔️ Eating ENOUGH
✔️ Addressing trauma to teach your body it is safe
✔️ Anti-inflam nutrients like high dose omega-3 & curcumin
✔️ Doing a gut protocol to address leaky gut and dysbiosis
✔️ Supporting your detox pathways using herbs and strategies like sweating and infrared saunas
✔️ Using herbs and nutrients to correct your hormone levels if required
✔️ Correcting identified nutrient deficiencies
✔️ Remove any triggers to the immune system (allergies, intolerances, environmental toxins, heavy metals, gut issues, stealth pathogens, viral issues)

My naturopathic non negotiables:
Lipids, AKA omega 3 - repairs your skin barrier by changing the pH of the skin (important for skin immunity), and makes your skin cells plump and juicy. Will also help to reduce redness, inflammation and scarring. The DOSE is important here - a fish oil a day will not keep your acne at bay!

NAG - promotes collagen renewal in the skin to reduce dullness, will also speed up cell turnover. Also works on the gut to reduce inflammation by healing a leaky gut lining.

Zinc + lactoferrin combo - increases cell turnover and improves skin immunity.

Sugar free - to reduce inflammation in the body to improve the quality of new skin cells and skin pH. Will also help to reduce hormonal acne if androgens are at play.

Knowing how acne happens is how you understand why roaccutane and doxycycline don’t work for some, or it works while you’re on the drug and then it comes back.

Roaccutane dries up the oil, which is why people feel dry, and also why your brain/mood is so affected as our brain is mostly oil/fat.

What it doesn’t do: correct oil consistency, change the pH of your skin to control microbes, look at the ingredients in your products to identify comedogenic ingredients, teach you how to cleanse properly, support your skin to naturally remove dead skin cells (this process is called desquamation and our skin has the natural ability to do this without exfoliation!), address any internal causes like hormonal imbalances, inflammation & gut issues.

Doxycycline reduces c.acne and potential strep/staph bacterial overgrowths, and minimises your immune response to reduce redness and inflammation.

What it doesn’t do: correct the oil consistency, change your skins pH, look at the ingredients in your products to identify comedogenic ingredients, teach you how to cleanse properly, support your skin to naturally remove dead skin cells, address any internal causes like hormonal imbalances, inflammation & gut issues.

I work with people in these medications all the time and there is a lot more you can do with natural medicine to allow a smooth progression OFF the medication. There are also natural alternatives to these medications that do not have the same side effects.

Leaky gut is something I am seeing a LOT in clinic at the moment

Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, occurs when the lining of the gut becomes damaged and allows things to enter from the gut that triggers inflammation - this can manifest as food sensitivities, fatigue, allergies and intolerances and even skin issues like acne and eczema 😭😭😭

Healing your gut starts by giving your body the nutrients it needs. If you are needing
some additional support with your gut, reach out for a more personalised approach!

When it comes to managing acne, certain nutrients can make a BIG difference in supporting clear, healthy skin from the inside out.

Zinc, for example, is an anti-inflammatory mineral that can help soothe redness and reduce breakouts. You’ll find it in foods like pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, and cashews, but if there aren’t regulars in your diet, a targeted zinc supplement could be beneficial.

Vitamin A is another nutrient that is amazing for skin, aiding in cell turnover and keeping sebum production balanced. This vitamin can improve both acne severity and texture. Foods like sweet potatoes, carrots and leafy greens are all rich in vitamin A 🍠 🥕🥬

Lactoferrin, a protein with natural antibacterial properties, can also help reduce acne-causing bacteria and calm inflammation. It’s present in dairy products like kefir and yoghurt or can be added as a supplements.

Meanwhile, N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) has been shown to support skin hydration and reduce acne marks over time, working to improve the look of lingering pigmentation.

And last but not least! Omega-3 fatty acids provide powerful anti-inflammatory support, helping to balance out redness and reduce breakouts. These fats are abundant in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel, but if fish isn’t a staple in your meals, a quality fish oil supplement may be a convenient way to meet your skin’s needs.

If you are struggling with acne a HOLISTIC approach from the inside out is always the best for healing. Pairing these nutrients with lifestyle changes, like a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress are a great place to start.

If you are needing extra support to your skin, DM me to find out how a Naturopath can help support you in your journey x

Acne isn’t just about what’s on the surface - it’s a complex condition influenced by diet, hormones, gut health, and more. High sugar intake, food intolerances (especially dairy), stress, and even genetics can play a role. These factors contribute to excess oil production, clogged pores, bacterial overgrowth, and inflammation, leading to those painful, stubborn breakouts.

Here’s what you can do:

💌 Diet: Cut back on refined sugars and dairy, focus on low GI foods, and add more omega-3s like fish, flax, and chia.
💌 Gut Health: Support your gut with probiotics and fibre-rich foods like plant-based yoghurts, kimchi, and leafy greens.
💌 Skincare: Establish a gentle skincare routine with antibacterial ingredients like tea tree oil.
💌 Hydration & Exercise: Keep your lymphatic system moving with plenty of water and regular exercise.

Key nutrients like zinc, vitamins A, C, and D, and essential fatty acids can also be beneficial. Herbs like echinacea and green tea are natural allies for reducing bacteria and inflammation.

Remember!! A Naturopathic approach goes beyond treating symptoms - we aim to address the root cause and support your whole body on the path to clear, healthy skin ✨ 💅🏽
